Superstition is not unique to Russian and Ukrainian culture, many cultures across Europe and Asia still mind the superstitions handed down over the centuries. While not every Ukrainian/Russian woman believes in superstitions whole heartedly there are many who do. It may be wise to familiarise yourself with some of these “bad luck charms” to know for future to keep things positive in your relationship with your new Ukrainian/Russian bride. Many Ukrainian/Russian superstitions directly relate to avoiding conflict in relationships so minding them will be beneficial to your relationship, even if it is only for the benefit of your new bride’s psyche.

If one person in the relationship accidentally steps on the other’s foot, the person who was stepped on should then lightly step on the foot of the person who stepped first. It is said that doing this helps the two of you to avoid a future conflict.

Talking about future success, especially bragging or boasting about it, is considered a jinx against it. For this reason your russian bride may be hesitant to discuss future plans or aspirations with you.

Giving gifts such as knives or other sharp objects is taboo as they are considered symbols of separation. If one must be given it is common to exchange a small sum of money, such as a ruble or a dollar, to make it a trade or exchange.

You should never hand a knife directly to your loved one. Instead you should place the knife down on a surface, such as the table or the counter, and let the other person pick it up. Handing a knife directly to someone is considered bad luck as it is said that the two will get into a fight.

When walking the two of you should never be split by objects you encounter along your path. For example should you be walking with your Ukrainian/Russian lady and encounter a tree or pole along the way you should both keep to one side or the other and not split ways to go around. Splitting your path is considered a bad omen and the sign of a weak relationship.

Rain on your wedding day is considered a good omen and indicated future financial wealth.
One must take extra special care when setting a wedding date. Once you have set your wedding date it should not be changed. Changing the date is considered a bad omen and some russians even feel that the bad luck will carry on to your first born.
