Madrid, Feb 15 (EFE).- Spain will call its ambassador in Iran home for consultations if the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad does not provide an explanation or apologize for the arrest of a Spanish diplomat in Tehran, the European nation's foreign minister said Tuesday. Trinidad Jimenez gave Iranian authorities 48 hours to provide "satisfactory" response and to explain why chief consular official Ignacio Perez-Cambra was held under arrest for four hours on Monday.
If no such response from Tehran is forthcoming, the minister warned in remarks to reporters before appearing before Parliament that she will call home the Spanish envoy. Iran violated the Vienna Convention, which regulates diplomatic relations, by arresting a Spanish diplomat without telling him why, Jimenez said.
The foreign ministry summoned Iran's ambassador in Madrid, Morteza Saffari Natanzi, on Monday to explain the diplomat's detention.
Perez-Cambra was arrested by six men in plainclothes at the entrance to the Spanish Embassy in the Iranian capital on a day marked by violent repression of opposition demonstrations. The Spanish diplomat was held for 4 1/2 hours at a police station and then released. The Spanish foreign ministry announced Monday that it had suspended an upcoming visit to Madrid by a senior Iranian diplomat. .
