#Syria - 30,000 Syrian children 'starving' on Jordan border: Al Jazeera English

Published on 1 Jul 2016
More than 30,000 Syrian children are facing starvation in Jordan after authorities in Amman suspended life-saving food and medical aid to refugees living along its northeastern border with Syria.

Between 60-70,000 Syrians, mostly children and women have been denied access to food and safe drinking water during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting from dusk till dawn, after Jordanian authorities blocked emergency aid supplies to an area known as the 'berm' last month following an attack by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group.

Gerry Simpson, a senior refugee researcher and advocate at Human Rights Watch talks to Al Jazeera about the crisis unfolding on Jordan's border.

The United Kingdom's vote to leave the European Union will dominate the bloc's agenda for the rest of the year, Slovakia's prime minister said on Friday.

The Slovak government has just taken up the six-month rotating presidency of the EU; the task no longer enjoys the power it once did, but it gives a country the chance to frame the policy agenda.

BATM Advanced Communications (LON:BVC) CEO Zvi Marom discusses Hepatitis C diagnostics in China: ProactiveInvestors Stocktube

Published on 1 Jul 2016
BATM Advanced Communications Limited (LON:BVC) has received a boost with its Chinese unit Adaltis was valued at US$58mln as a result of a new equity investment by a local partner.

Adaltis, a manufacturer of medical devices, is getting a US$3mln (RMB20mln) injection from Egens Biotechnology in return for a 5.5% stake in the business – and the partner also gets an option to buy a further 10% at a later date.

The investment terms are the result of six months negotiation and Zvi Marom, BATM chief executive, says all parties agree that it has been done at a “very fair price”.

It comes as an Egens and Adaltis joint venture presses ahead with plans to distribute Hepatitis C diagnostic kits through China, one of the countries most afflicted by the infectious disease with an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 deaths every year.

“Nobody can ignore the Chinese market,” Marom said in an interview with Stocktube.
He highlights that medicines focussing on infants and infectious diseases are priorities for the Chinese government.

“They are pushing the medical sector, they are investing a lot of money and there is no doubt that if you want to be a global player, and this is our ambition, then you have to have the Chinese market,” he added.

Stobart Group (LON:STOB) chief: ‘Brexit won’t have much of an effect’: ProactiveInvestors Stocktube

Published on 1 Jul 2016
Stobart Group Ltd (LON:STOB) tells Proactive Investors that it is “pretty confident” Brexit will not have much of an effect on its largely UK-based businesses.

“With the deflation of the pound I’m sure we’ll find more visitors coming to the UK and using the South-End Airport,” says chief executive Andrew Tinkler.

“We’ll be looking at links with Northern and Eastern Europe,” says Tinkler.

But he says the group was going to be sensible about which connections will work.
“We’ve got to be aware of the ticket, people buy on price. But it’s the efficiency of our service that is so much better, allowing us to compete with other big budget airlines,” he says.

Addressing Thursday’s announcement that the group would be doubling its dividend, Tinkler says that shareholders were undoubtedly happy.

“Our free growth business is a solid platform to grow off allowing us to return over £300mln to shareholders.”

"They shall not grow old" The Queen attends overnight Somme vigil. 100 years on from the Battle of the Somme

Published on 30 Jun 2016
The Royal Family tonight led the nation in commemorating the thousands of troops who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a moving service at Westminster Abbey, one of many events being held in memory of the fallen soldiers.

In France, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by Prince Harry for a vigil at the Thiepval Memorial, where the 70,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers with no known grave are commemorated.
The moving services come on the eve of the centenary of the start of the Somme offensive. On July 1, 1916, following a seven-day British bombardment, some 120,000 men clambered from their trenches and went 'over the top' — to be met by a hail of German machine-gun fire that mowed down half of them. With 20,000 dead and 40,000 wounded, it was the bloodiest single day in British military history.
By the end of the four-month battle in northern France, more than a million soldiers had been killed and wounded on both sides. The First World War would drag on for another two years.

#UK - Jeremy Corbyn’s insiders struggled to get Labour leader to fight Brexit: VICE News

Published on 29 Jun 2016
Members of Jeremy Corbyn's inner circle struggled to get the Labour Party leader to participate in an energetic campaign to keep the United Kingdom in the European Union, a newly released video from VICE News reveals.

A mass revolt by Labour members of Parliament after the Leave vote won last week accuses Corbyn, a longtime Euroskeptic, of sabotaging his own party's campaign to remain. The accusation is particularly serious considering that 75 percent of young Britons voted to remain in the EU, and Corbyn was elected party leader last year thanks to young people's vote.

In previously unreleased footage shot during the filming of a VICE News documentary about Corbyn, members of his staff express doubt that they would be able to get him to engage fully in the fight against Brexit.
