#Israel - Netanyahu calls UK arms suspension to Israel ‘shameful’ | BBC News

x

3 September 2024

The UK has defended its decision to suspend some arms sales to Israel. On 2 September, it suspended around 30 out of 350 weapons export licences to Israel, saying there is a "clear risk" the equipment could be used to commit serious violations of international law. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the decision "shameful", saying on social media that it "will only embolden Hamas". But UK Defence Secretary John Healey insisted the UK remained a "staunch ally" of Israel, telling the BBC Israel's security would not be weakened by the decision. Husam Zomlot, the Palestinians' top envoy to the UK, called the partial ban an “important first step” to the UK’s fulfilment of its “legal obligations under domestic and international law”.

For more, FRANCE 24's Delano D'Souza is joined by Patrick Bury, former NATO analyst and senior lecturer in Security at University of Bath in the UK.

How it all started

The War in Donbass (also known as the War in Ukraine or War in Eastern Ukraine) is an ongoing armed conflict in the Donbass region of Ukraine. From the beginning of March 2014, demonstrations by pro-Russian and anti-government groups took place in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine, together commonly called the "Donbass", in the aftermath of the 2014 Ukrainian revolution and the Euromaidan movement. These demonstrations, part of a wider group of concurrent pro-Russian protests across southern and eastern Ukraine, escalated into an armed conflict between the separatist forces of the self-declared Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, and the Ukrainian government Prior to a change of the top leadership in August, the separatists were largely led by Russian citizensRussian paramilitaries are reported to make up from 15% to 80% of the combatants.

3 September 2024

In an interview with FRANCE 24, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert said Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was ultimately to blame for the shocking death of six more hostages in Gaza over the weekend. Israel says the six hostages were "brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists", something the group denies. "They were killed by Hamas," Olmert said. But "Netanyahu is responsible for the erosion that led to the killing of these six people, and the killing of many others that were found before, and the ones that will be killed tomorrow and the day after tomorrow", he added.
