F1: Session Report

2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix - Thursday

Solid Start in Las Vegas
  • The team opened the race weekend in Las Vegas by topping both Thursday practice sessions.
  • F1 returns for the second Las Vegas Grand Prix, kicking off a triple header that culminates in the Abu Dhabi season finale.
  • The cool conditions of the Nevada desert after sundown saw both ambient and track temperatures hovering in the low teens.
  • The team's focus was therefore primarily on understanding the necessary tyre warm-up for the single lap and management for the long run.
  • Both sessions saw the team run the Medium and Soft compound tyres on both cars, with Lewis setting the pace in both FP1 and FP2.
  • George also featured near the top of the timing screens, ending FP1 in P2 and FP2 in P3 having encountered traffic on his likely best effort.
  • The team return to the track tomorrow for FP3 and Qualifying around the 6.201km Las Vegas Strip Circuit.

Lewis Hamilton
I felt really good out there today. I think that is the first practice day this year that we've been consistently strong, and the car has felt quick throughout. I am really enjoying driving this track and it was nice to put together three good, competitive sectors over the lap.

Despite topping both sessions, it is difficult to know exactly where we are in the competitive order with everyone running different fuel loads and run plans. Our long run pace didn't look quite as good as our speed on the single lap. We therefore have work to do overnight to try and improve that without compromising our speed for qualifying. I'm hopeful we can still be in the mix tomorrow; I will get some good rest tonight and come back strong.

George Russell
That was a really good day for us as a team. It is still only practice, but it is definitely encouraging. The car has been working from the off and I felt good behind the wheel. Lewis was on it from lap one and did a great job to top both sessions.

That said, it is a street track and quite a dirty circuit today. As it continues to both clean up and grip up, I am sure it will continue to evolve. It is likely that the times will be three seconds or so quicker come qualifying tomorrow. We will therefore pick through the data overnight to understand exactly why we were so strong and how we can continue to make improvements too. It is clear others will take a step forward so we will have to be at our best if we want to challenge at the front again on Friday.

Andrew Shovlin, Trackside Engineering Director
We've had a solid day here in Las Vegas. It's tricky with the very cold temperatures to get the tyres into the window but in relative terms, it looks like we were coping reasonably well. It was encouraging that all our laps on low fuel looked competitive in both practice sessions. The circuit is going to grip up significantly so we need to make sure we can track that with the setup, but so far it does look like we're in a better place than at most of the recent races. It's quite hard to work out where we sit on the long run. We saw a lot of degradation across the field, with cars that pushed harder early on looking poor later in the stint but it's clear that a bit of management is going to be required to look after the tyres on Saturday night.

Toto Talks Las Vegas

We head to Las Vegas ready to tackle the final three races of the season. We are focused on ending this year as strongly as possible and providing some more highlights as we close out 2024. We are looking forward to the races ahead, to ending our incredible journey with Lewis on a high and to building momentum for 2025.

We are excited for our return to Las Vegas. F1 put on an incredible show last year and the sight of F1 cars racing down the Strip at night was one of the season's highlights. The opportunity to do 180 mph down such an iconic piece of real estate in a high-powered Mercedes-AMG GT R was one that I couldn't turn down. I was therefore fortunate to take some of our partners on hot laps of the track and it was an experience that I, and I hope also they, won't forget. The circuit itself and ambient conditions provided a fascinating challenge for both the drivers and teams, along with creating exciting racing and a captivating Grand Prix. It I am sure this year's event will be an even greater success, and build on the continued growth, interest, and success of our sport in the USA.

Fact File: Las Vegas Grand Prix
  • Formula One returned to Las Vegas for the first time in over 40 years in 2023.
  • The sport's previous visits to 'Sin City' took place in 1981 and 1982 under the moniker of the Caesars Palace Grand Prix.
  • Each edition was that year's season finale with the Williams of Alan Jones taking victory in 1981 and the Tyrrell of Michele Alboreto victorious in 1982.
  • Max Verstappen claimed victory when F1 returned to Las Vegas in 2023.
  • The current layout has 17 corners, 11 to the left and six to the right.
  • The 6.201km track runs anti-clockwise, and blasts through the most famous streets of Las Vegas including the Strip at high speed.
  • The track is the second-longest on the 2024 calendar, only shorter than Spa-Francorchamps.
  • That includes a section over 1.9 km long from the exit of Turn 12 to the braking zone at Turn 14, which is taken completely flat.
  • The 112-metre run from pole position to the first braking zone is the second shortest of the year. Only Baku in Azerbaijan (at 89m) has a shorter run.
  • Speeds around the Strip circuit in Las Vegas are some of the fastest of the year, reaching nearly 350km/h.
  • With track temperatures down around 18 degrees Celsius for most of the first event in 2023, Las Vegas is again expected to be the coldest race of the year for teams.
  • The set-up trade-off is ensuring that top speeds are not compromised whilst the car retains good mechanical grip and downforce for the low-speed corners, such as Turns 1-4, Turns 7-9, Turn 12, and Turns 14-16.
  • Las Vegas is one four circuits on the F1 calendar in 2024 to have three heavy braking zones on the lap, along with Miami, Canada, and Austria.
  • This will be the third race of the season to be held on a Saturday, after Bahrain and Saudi Arabia earlier in the year.

#F1 - Lifting the lid: The cutting-edge tech fueling F1 success: CNBC International

27 October 2024

While a Formula One driver may be the star athlete behind the wheel, it is the cutting-edge technology and the skilled engineers deploying it that complete the rest of the team. F1 races are often decided by tenths of seconds, and technological advancements can make or break a team’s time on the circuit. “Formula One is all about performance, and it’s performance which drives success on the racetrack. So, we as engineers have always focused on how can we get the quickest car, and to achieve that requires a very innovative approach,” said Ben Waterhouse, head of performance engineering for Oracle Red Bull Racing. According to Waterhouse, the four main ingredients contributing to a high performing car are its chassis, the power unit, the tires and the driver. “Without all four of them operating at a very high level, it's very difficult to have real success,” Waterhouse added. The F1 winter break is the period between the end of the season and the start of pre-season testing, but it is hardly a “break” for the team’s engineers. “There's different approaches to designing a Formula One car. Either you take the base of what was your previous year's car, and you carry that over, or you're going for a complete conceptual change to unlock more performance. In both cases, there's still a lot of work that goes into physically building the car in the winter season,” said Dan Keyworth, director of business technology for McLaren Racing. James Vowles, team principal for Williams Racing, said he spends about 30% of his time on technology. “What I'm doing is creating technologies and infrastructure that allow us not to produce a good car in ‘24 but allow us to produce a good car in 2026, ‘27, ‘28. It sounds so far away in our world, but it's really important to set that right timeline out. What we’re fixing can’t be fixed overnight,” Vowles said. Watch the video above for an in-depth look at the technology that fuels F1 success, featuring interviews with Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, Williams Racing Team Principal James Vowles, Scuderia Ferrari HP Team Principal Fréd Vasseur and more.
