#Netanyahu #IsraelHamasCeasefire #GazaCeasefireDeal - Israel-Hamas ceasefire in Gaza takes effect

19 January 2025

A ceasefire deal agreed between Israel and Hamas has gone into effect after a nearly three-hour delay.

The statement came after Hamas named the three Israeli female captives to be freed on Sunday as Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Damari.

Netanyahu said earlier that Hamas had not lived up to its commitment to provide the names of the three captives it’s set to release in exchange for dozens of Palestinian prisoners. Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary joins us from Khan Younis in southern Gaza and Stefanie Dekker joins us live from Amman to discuss the latest developments.

#Israel - Gideon Levy on Israel's "Moral Blindness": Gaza Babies Freeze; Strikes Kill Medical Staff, Reporters: Democracy Now

27 December 2024

In northern Gaza, the director of the besieged Kamal Adwan Hospital says five medical workers were among 50 people killed in Israeli strikes near the hospital. Israeli forces then stormed the hospital and forced hundreds, including patients, into the streets.

This all comes as The New York Times has confirmed past reporting by +972 Magazine that on October 7, 2023, Israel loosened military rules meant to protect noncombatants in Gaza.

Award-winning Israeli journalist Gideon Levy decries the moral decay of Israel, which has gone so far as to open a luxurious rest area for soldiers in northern Gaza: "It's the same moral blindness to what's going on around you." Levy also discusses his latest piece, headlined "The IDF's Own Sickening 'Zone of Interest' in the Heart of Gaza." #Israel #Gaza #GolanHeights - Airstrikes kill 10 in Gaza as Israel advances into Golan's demilitarized buffer zone | DW News

26 December 2024

Palestinian health authorities say at least ten people have been killed in separate Israeli strikes in Gaza. The strikes hit Gaza City in the north and Nuseirat in central Gaza. The toll includes five journalists from the Al-Quds televison network, which is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group. They were killed when their vehicle was hit outside a hospital. The Israeli military said it targeted the group's militants at the Nuseirat refugee camp. Israel's government has approved plans to double the population of Israeli settlers in the occupied Golan Heights, an area of Syria that Israel unilaterally annexed in 1981. The government's move comes in the wake of the fall of the Assad regime in Syria. The Israeli army has also advanced into Golan's demilitarized buffer zone in Syria and launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian military targets. DW Correspondent Emily Gordine reports from Ein Zivan in the occupied Golan Heights.

#Israel #Gaza - Israeli military carries out wave of attacks in Gaza | BBC News

22 December 2024

The Israeli military has carried out a wave of attacks across the Gaza Strip, hitting targets in Gaza City, Rafah and Khan Younis. A school sheltering displaced families and the Kamal Adwan Hospital, in northern Gaza, were among the sites hit, killing at least 28 Palestinians overnight and into recent hours. It comes as mediators try to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Hamas officials say a deal is closer than ever if Israel does not impose new conditions. Concerning the strike on the school, the Israeli military said that the school was a command and control centre being used by Hamas.

#gaza #lebanon #israel - How Meta restricted news in Palestinian territories | BBC News

19 December 2024

Palestinian news outlets have seen a steep drop in audience engagement on their Facebook pages since October 2023. BBC News Arabic and BBC World Service analysis of more than 100,000 Facebook posts shows that news organisations based in Palestinian territories have seen a 77% drop in engagement since the start of the war in Gaza. The first comprehensive data analysis by territory since the start of the war on Gaza. Analysis of similar pages from Israel and neighbouring Arabic speaking countries shows a rise in engagement – the term used for likes, reactions, comments and shares. It comes after a year of Palestinians complaining that they are being so called ‘Shadow banned’. On Facebook’s sister platform, Instagram, exclusive access to leaked documents exposes how a change was made to Instagram's algorithm at the start of the war in Gaza, targeting Palestinian users only. Meta confirmed changes to Instagram’s algorithm were made, and says “temporary product and policy measures” were adopted on Facebook in response to the conflict. But denies deliberately silencing Palestinian voices and stands by its decision to alter how many people see content from Facebook Pages on safety grounds. One of the most immediate and noticeable effects of shadowban on any social media platform, like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook etc., is a sudden and unexplained drop in engagement. This includes fewer likes, comments, shares, and overall interactions on your posts.Sep 17, 2024

#Gaza - Israel ‘ethnically cleansing’ north Gaza says former Israeli defence minister: Middle East Eye

1 December 2024

In an interview with Democra TV, former Israeli chief of staff and defence minister Moshe "Bogie" Ya'alon accused Israel of engaging in "ethnic cleansing" in the northern Gaza Strip. Ya’alon, who was dismissed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2016, has since emerged as one of Netanyahu’s most vocal critics. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported on Saturday that the death toll in Gaza has risen to at least 44,382, with more than 105,142 Palestinians injured since the beginning of Israel's military offensive on 7 October 2023.

#Israel - The historic ICC arrest warrant marks the beginning of the end for Netanyahu: Marwan Bishara

21 November 2024

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes in Gaza.

It's also issued warrants for Hamas commander Mohammed Deif. Israel says he was killed in an airstrike in July. But that has not been confirmed. Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, says it is time for the US government to penalise the ICC for its warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said that the decision to issue these warrants was “not political”, and that the court’s decision should be “respected and implemented”. Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, has praised the ICC’s decision to issue long-awaited arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders.

#usa #gaza #israel - US won't stop any weapons to Israel over Gaza humanitarian aid situation • FRANCE 24 English

13 November 2024

Eight international aid groups said Tuesday that Israel has failed to meet US demands for greater humanitarian access to the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where hunger experts say the north may already be experiencing famine.

However, the Biden administration said Tuesday it won't limit weapons transfers to Israel because the US says its key ally has done good but limited progress in increasing the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Last month, Washington told Israel to boost aid to Gaza within 30 days, or else it could trigger US laws requiring it to scale back American military support.

FRANCE 24's Chief Foreign Editor Rob Parsons tells us more.

#Gaza #FrancescaAlabese #UNSpecialRapporteur #Israel - UN special rapporteur says sanctions must be imposed on Israel:

3 November 2024

Francesca Albanese says there is nothing that prevents a UN member state from abiding by international law, and states individually have an obligation not to aid or assist a state “which is committing atrocities day in and day out”.

“They have to stop those who are still transferring weapons [to Israel]… and also buying or purchasing military and security services from Israel must stop,” she told Al Jazeera.

Albanese said any trade with Israel must be “interrupted”, adding that diplomatic and political sanctions must also be applied.

“Whoever is not taking these steps is either responsible or completely indifferent to the plight of millions of Palestinians,” she noted.

#Israel #Gaza - "Genocide as Colonial Erasure": U.N. Expert Francesca Albanese on Israel's "Intent to Destroy" Gaza: Democracy Now

31 October 2024

We are joined by U.N. special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, who says Israel is committing genocide on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Facing accusations of antisemitism from Israeli and U.S. officials, Albanese is in New York to present her report, titled "Genocide as colonial erasure," which finds that Israel's genocide is founded on "ideological hatred" and "dehumanization" and "enabled through the various organs of the state," and recommends that Israel be unseated from the United Nations over its conduct.

She argues that Israel's attacks on U.N. employees, including the killings of at least 230 U.N. staff in Gaza, its flagrant violations of U.N. resolutions and international law and the unique status of "the first settler-colonial genocide to be ever litigated before [an international] court" justify this measure. Israel's continued impunity,

Albanese warns, "is the nail in the coffin of the U.N. Charter."

#israel #iran #lebanon #gaza - ‘Nobody benefits from such a war’: Former Israeli official: Al Jazeera English

3 October 2024

At least seven people have been killed and eight wounded in Israeli air strikes targeting central Beirut overnight.

It hit a building in the area of Bachoura - just one kilometre from Lebanon's Parliament and the Prime Minister's office. Meanwhile, more Israeli strikes have targeted Dahiyeh, the southern suburb of Beirut where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed last week.

Israel has hit the area several times in the past two weeks, saying it was targeting Hezbollah sites. And in Gaza, an overnight Israeli strike has killed at least one Palestinian and injured another in Deir el-Balah, in the central part of the strip.

An Israeli helicopter gunship struck a tent housing displaced people in a school compound. Alon Liel is a former director general at Israel's Foreign Ministry. He was also a former ambassador to South Africa.

He says Israel has been weakened from nearly a year of war in Gaza and the prospect of a protracted conflict in the region has its population worried.
