United Nations Forces, comprised of United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, Philippines and South Korea troops in the vicinity of the Imjin River fell under direct attack when the Chinese Spring Offensive commenced on 22 April 1951.
The 29th British Independent Infantry Brigade Group, commanded by Brigadier Tom Brody, was under the most severe attack and was eventually surrounded by the enemy. An attempt to reinforce them failed due to harsh terrain and overwhelming enemy power.
The 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James Carne, bravely held out for more than three days against more than 30,000 Chinese troops. Of the 700 Gloucesters, only 40 men reached safety, the rest were captured or killed by the Chinese. Lt. Col. Carne was held at a Chinese POW Camp in North Korea till after the armistice agreement was signed. He spent 19 months in solitary confinement, and many of his men died due to harsh treatment at the camp.
The British 29th Brigade's brave stand provided UN Forces enough time to re-group and block the Chinese advance onto Seoul, but not without sacrifice, they suffered 1,091 casualties, including 622 of Glosters. The US lost 1,500 men either killed or missing in action, the South Koreans 8,000 and the other UN forces approximately 1,000 men. Chinese casualties were estimated at 70,000.

The IDF has ordered evacuations in eastern Gaza, while Israelis have called for protests. In Tel Aviv, the families of hostages joined thousands protesting against the Israeli strikes on Gaza - accusing Netanyahu's government of sacrificing their relatives.

Egypt will ask Muslim nations for their support at a meeting in Saudi Arabia on Friday.

Israel has blocked the entry of all humanitarian aid into Gaza, demanding Hamas agree to a US plan for a ceasefire extension. The first phase of the ceasefire expired on Saturday, and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Hamas had so far refused to accept a temporary extension under a proposal by Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff. A Hamas spokesman said blocking supplies to Gaza was "cheap blackmail”, and urged mediators to intervene. The initial phase of the ceasefire halted 15 months of fighting between Hamas and the Israeli military, allowing the release of 33 Israeli and five Thai hostages for about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. But negotiations on phase two, including the release of all remaining living hostages and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, have barely begun.

President Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza with Palestinians moving to countries such as Egypt and Jordan has been condemned as a plan for ethnic cleansing. Mr Trump called Gaza a “demolition site” and said people there should move “either temporarily or long term”. He said: You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing". He suggested that houses could be built “at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change”. The President said he had made the request to Jordan's King Abdullah and Egypt's president. Both countries have rejected the idea of taking Palestinian refugees from Gaza. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority also condemned the proposal. Lawyers and human rights advocates described it as ethnic cleansing. However the proposal has been welcomed by far-right Israeli nationalists. Mr Trump’s comments come as a fragile ceasefire is continuing in Gaza. They were then taken to Israel. The Palestinian militant group and allied groups captured some 250 hostages during the October 2023 terror attacks that began the war. Dozens of Palestinian prisoners are also set to be released from Israeli jails under the terms of the six-week truce.
