Defence Secretary John Healey spoke to Sky News this morning as he revealed to MPs earlier this week that a UK submarine helped warn off a Russian spy ship from UK waters. There are reports the ship may have been scouting undersea cables and infrastructure around Britain.

The bond selloff triggered by the UK autumn budget has tempered the outlook for the housing market. Bloomberg Economics is now forecasting that house prices will rise 4% by the end of next year, but the pace of growth is expected to be bumpy.

UK inflation rose to an eight-month high in November, drifting further above the Bank of England’s 2% target. The consumer prices index increased 2.6% annually, up from 2.3% in October, the Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday.

Storm Darragh brought high winds and severe weather to Britain's west coast on Saturday (Dec. 7). On Blackpool's famous waterfront, wind-carried sand swept along the promenade past Blackpool Tower. The UK Met office said in Wales gusts of 93mph were recorded overnight at Capel Curig and 92mph Aberdaron and warned of continuing strong winds, heavy rain and some hill snow throughout the day as Darragh moves across the Britain. The Energy Networks Association said thousands of homes were still without power as they work to restore services and the British broadcaster BBC reported one van driver killed by a fallen tree during the storm. A rare red weather warning has been issued for land swathes of the UK, and many residents received government SMS warnings urging caution when travelling. #storm #darragh #uk #news18live #news18

Russia's intelligence agency has been on a mission to generate "mayhem on British and European streets", the head of MI5 has said, as he warned the UK faces the most "complex and interconnected" threat it has ever seen. There has also been 20 Iran-backed plots since 2022, the director general Ken McCallum said. He said the complex mix of terror-related threats and threats from nation states meant that MI5 had "one hell of a job on its hands". A total of 43 late-stage attack plots on the UK have been foiled since 2017, he said, with some plotters trying to "get hold of firearms and explosives".
