http://www.euronews.net/ Former French President Jacques Chirac has received a two-year suspended jail term after being been found guilty of mis-using public funds.

The case relates to the creation of so-called fake jobs when he was mayor of Paris. Chirac was accused of diverting finances into phantom jobs for political allies between 1977 and 1995.

It is the first conviction of a French head of state since Marshall Philippe Pétain was found guilty of collaborating with the Nazis in 1945.

Chirac was not in court for the ruling.
