The aircraft carrier, China's first, is said to have been taking part in trials in the Yellow Sea. Beijing is seeking to boost its military power amid long-standing territorial disputes in the region.
The vessel is a refitted former Soviet warship - the Varyag. It is understood to have been launched several months ago.
