17 December 2024

A high-ranking Russian general has been killed in an explosion in Moscow less than 24 hours after Ukraine accused him of ordering the use of chemical weapons against its forces. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, 54, and his driver, named only as Ilya P, died when a bomb detonated outside his home about five miles from the Kremlin, investigators in Moscow said. Images from the scene showed two bodies lying in the blood-stained snow outside the ruins of the entrance to an apartment block. READ MORE: https://www.thetimes.com/world/russia... The bomb is believed to have been strapped to a kick scooter that had been left near by, according to Baza, a Russian Telegram channel with links to the security services. It said the explosion had happened at 6am as Kirillov was being picked up by his driver at the Sreda housing complex.

#Ukraine - Russia's Black Sea Fleet: Ukraine's navy says Russia has pulled back its ships

16 December 2024

The Ukrainian navy is reporting that Russia has pulled it's Black Sea Fleet back to the Sea of Azov.

Since the War in Ukraine began, Ukraine's navy has sunk or destroyed at least a quarter of the fleet.

Targeted attacks by Ukraine have killed a large number of the fleet's commanders. In November, a Russian commander in charge of missile batteries for the fleet was assassinated. In eastern Ukraine, Russian forces are advancing on several fronts. Russian forces are within one-and-a-half kilomters of the town of Pokrovsk -- a vital road and rail junction.

For months, the strategic town has been the focus of Russia’s attempts to take the region. The Russian Ministry of Defence said its forces also took control of two villages in the Donetsk region. Al Jazeera's Alex Gatopoulos has more from Kyiv on the withdrawal of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.
