Director Guillermo Del Toro
The Devil's Backbone starts with a lyrical questioning of what a ghost is - "A tragedy condemned to repeat itself again and again. An emotion trapped in time, like an insect trapped in amber." These quiet musings set the tone for this superior drama, as well as introducing its themes - tragedy and the supernatural.
During the Spanish Civil War, a boy is delivered to an isolated orphanage on a sun-baked Spanish plain. Despite being intelligent and self-possessed, Carlos (Tielve) is bewildered by his new circumstances - even more so when learns of the disappearance of another boy and glimpses the figure of an unknown child.
The orphanage is ostensibly run by two ageing Communist sympathisers, teacher Dr Casares (Luppi) and governess Carmen (Parades), though young caretaker and sometime resident Jacinto (Noriega) holds virile sway. Jacinto is only present because he knows there is gold locked in a safe. As the war rages and Jacinto schemes, Carlos begins to unravel the mystery of the missing boy and the truth about the ghost, known as "the one who sighs".
