North Country (film)
.
In 1989, Josey, played by Charlize Theron, returns to her hometown in Northern Minnesota with her children, Sam (Thomas Curtis) and Karen (Elle arents'Peterson), after escaping from her abusive husband. She moves in with her parents, Alice (Sissy Spacek) and Hank (Richard Jenkins). Hank is ashamed of Josey, who became pregnant at the age of 16, and believes that this was the result of Josey being promiscuous. The townspeople believe the same, which causes them not to allow Josey to blend in. Her only friends are Kyle Dodge (Sean Bean) and his wife Glory (Frances McDormand), who works at the local iron mines – the town's main source of income – and they promise to get Josey a job there. They also allow Josey to stay at their place with her children, due to Josey's bad relationship with her father.
Josey quickly befriends the other female workers at the mine, which include Glory, Sherry (Michelle Monaghan) and Big Betty (Rusty Schwimmer), and becomes the target of provocations spearheaded by Bobby Sharp (Jeremy Renner), Josey's high school boyfriend who also works at the mine. Her attempts to stop the provocations by reporting it to the mine's higher-up only worsen it, and soon all the women are being verbally and physically abused by men at the factory. Josey, in addition, is also sexually harassed by many of them, including Bobby.
.
Josey's refusal in giving in on her male co-workers' demands causes them to spread lies about her being promiscuous and trying to seduce them, which cause Josey to be further segregated not only by her father and the men's wives, but also by Sam, who starts believing that his mother is indeed promiscuous after discovering that he was the result of her teenage pregnancy. After even the mine's board of directors refuses to hear Josey's complaints about the way women are treated at the mine, she quits and asks Bill White (Woody Harrelson) – a friend of Kyle and Glory and also a lawyer – to help her file a lawsuit against the company. Bill tells her that the best way to win a case like this is by convincing the other women to back up her statements in court. The women, however, are hesitant, as this would mean risking their jobs, and refuse. Josey also discovers that Glory has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig's Disease.
.
Hank is disappointed by Josey's decision, and Alice leaves him, tired of hearing him criticizing their daughter for something that was not her fault. Hank later attends a union meeting. Josey appears, hoping to address the miners and explain her reasons for suing the mine. When they refuse to hear her and start verbally abusing her, Hank stands up for his daughter and reprimands his co-workers for their rude treatment of Josey and all the women at the factory.รง
.
At the court, the mine's lawyers attempt to hold Josey's so-called "promiscuous" past against her, and have Bobby Sharp testify on how Sam is the fruit of a relationship between Josey and one of her teachers. Josey then reveals the truth: When she and Bobby were 16, they were caught skipping class and kissing by their teacher and were forced to stay after class as punishment. When detention ended, Bobby left first to start up his car, intending to give Josey a ride. While he was away, Josey was attacked and raped by her teacher. Bobby witnessed the act and, unable to cope with the trauma, interpreted it as consensual sex. Josey got pregnant from the rape, but refused to abort the baby or give it away, and had Sam. This causes both him and her father to regret the way they treated her over the years.
.
The revelation of the true circumstances behind the event that led the entire town to judge and mistreat Josey causes several of the miners to repent for their actions and apologize. It also gives the women the courage they need, and they stand up, backing up Josey's claims about the harassment. With this, the mining company loses the case and is forced to pay the women for what they suffered, in addition to establishing a sexual harassment policy at the workplace. Josey, vindicated, thanks Bill for all that he has done for her and her family and departs to teach Sam how to drive, telling him that she intends to buy him a car on his 18th birthday.

Farewell, Mashaal Tammo
Mashaal Tammo, one of the most active Kurdish leaders in the Syrian Kurdish community, and a highly respected figure across all segments of Syrian society, was born in Derbassiyeh in 1958. He was a resident of Qamishli, and was an agricultural engineer. He was married and had four sons and two daughters.
Mashaal Tammo was assassinated on Friday, October 7, 2011 in a residence in the city of Qamishli. He had survived an assasination attempt on September 8, 2011.
Tammo was the spokesperson for the Kurdish Future Movement Party, and was one of the most prominent political leaders among the Kurdish community. He had served as one of the leaders of the Kurdish Popular Union Party in Syria for more than two decades.
Mashaal Tammo left the Kurdish Popular Union Party at the end of 1999 and founded, along with other activists, the Committees for the Revival of Civil Society in Syria. In Qamishli, Tammo also formed the Badr Khan Cultural Forum, an organization that promoted topics of interest to the Syrian community in general, and the Kurdish community in particular. He headed this organization until it closed. Tammo was known as an educator, a politician, and an author on Kurdish issues.
On May 29, 2005, Mashaal Tammo established, with other young Kurds, the Kurdish Future Movement in Syria, a project to develop political and cultural concepts and practical application. He distanced himself from factional parties consumed by ideology. He threw himself into activism after the March 12 bloodshed in Qamishli, and was committed to liberal, peaceful, and democratic principles based on the concept that Syria, as a multi-ethnic country, embraces all its citizens, and the Kurds are an important element in the Syrian national fabric.
At dawn on Friday, August 15, 2008, while Mashaal Tammo was heading from the city of Ain Al-Arab/Kobani to Aleppo, he was arrested by an Air Force security patrol. He spent more than 10 days cut off from the outside world, while all security branches denied any knowledge of his whereabouts.
On August 26, 2008, Tammo was transported by Air Force Intelligence in Aleppo to the Political Security branch in Damascus, which in turn referred him to preliminary court in Damascus.
On May 11, 2009, the primary Criminal Court in Damascus, headed by Judge Mohyeddin Hallak, sentenced Tammo to three and a half years in prison for participating in the Syrian Opposition. As the spokesperson for the Kurdish Future Movement in Syria, he was charged with "undermining the prestige of the state and weakening the national sentiment and the morale of the nation." In accordance with Articles 285 -- 286 of the Syrian penal code, he was sentenced to three years for each violation, along with penalties. This resulted in a six-year prison term that was reduced to three and half years due to extenuating circumstances and an appeal.
Mashaal Tammo was released on June 8, 2011, along with Hassan Saleh and Maaroof Molla Ahmad, in an attempt by the authorities to ease tensions with the Kurds. However, Tammo delivered a powerful speech in which he reiterated his position on toppling the regime, and announced that he was joining the Syrian people's Revolution; in fact, he joined demonstrators and helped them gain momentum as other leaders joined him.
Mashaal Tammo helped to establish the National Salvation Conference of July 16, 2011, held outside Syria for security reasons. He continued in his efforts to unite the opposition, and was a founding member of the newly formed Syrian National Council.
Long live Mashaal Tammo, our great fighter and martyr. He will never be forgotten

Aries (Mar21/Apr20) You want to be the centre of someone’s universe, to be the first thing on your amour’s mind when they awake and the last thing they remember before falling asleep. It’s a good thing your sex appeal is so powerful. You have the ability to consume a lover’s thoughts, but be careful. This kind of intensity can lead to great anxiety, as well as tremendous joy. It might be better to pursue a more conventional relationship, especially if you’ve had a stormy childhood.
.
Taurus (Apr21/May21) Forming a powerful partnership gives you a sense of purpose. You love working alongside somebody who knows your strengths and weaknesses. It saves time explaining your actions. Many people perceive your stubborn attitude as a weakness. Your lover or business partner is grateful for your diligence. You won’t back down when the going gets tough. Similarly, you embrace your collaborator’s resourcefulness, trusting it will help you survive the lean times.
.
Gemini (May22/Jun21) Throwing yourself into a challenging work project provides the intellectual stimulation you crave. Be very careful with your budget. Outspending your means will come back to haunt you. On the other hand, if you deliver work quickly and inexpensively, you’ll get a huge promotion. Be sure to pinch pennies and keep a close eye on your colleagues’ costs. These days, few employers have any extra cash to waste on unnecessary items.
.
Cancer (Jun22/Jul23) You make a wonderful impression on a dark, mysterious stranger. Your admirer is captivated by your leadership ability. Somehow, you’re able to wield power without seeming like a harsh despot. You’re the embodiment of the iron fist inside a velvet glove. If the two of you embark on a romance, you won’t always have the upper hand. There will be a constant struggle for dominance, but that’s part of why you’re drawn to each other.
.
Leo (Jul24/Aug23) A deep, abiding love for your family causes you to make a drastic change. Taking a second job, cutting back your expenses, and starting a savings account are among the possibilities. You’re capable of tremendous hard work when it's for the benefit of loved ones. Buying a home is another possibility. You can get financing from a lending institution, provided you repair some small credit problems. Talk to a financial expert about becoming a good candidate for a loan.
.
Virgo (Aug24/Sep23) Don’t discuss the details of your private life with a nosy relative or neighbour. Just because everybody else airs their dirty laundry in public doesn’t mean you should. In fact, one of your most attractive qualities is your discretion. If you’re single, you will meet someone special in a classroom, library, or research lab. Keep your eyes open for a dark, mysterious stranger who keeps you guessing about their motives. The pull between you is palatable.
.
Libra (Sep24/Oct23) You long to succeed, but are afraid of realising your own authority. It’s much easier for you to play the peacemaker than the powerbroker. Still, this is the best time of the entire year to land a well paid post or promotion. Schedule an interview and be prepared to drive a hard bargain. If you feel like you’re in a dead end job, devise a plan to embark on a more satisfying career. It will require short term sacrifices, but in the end, you’ll be glad you took the plunge.
.
Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) Your sex appeal has never been stronger, so it will be child’s play to lure an admirer into your web of intrigue. Love, money, power, they are all yours for the asking. Take care you don’t harm anyone in your quest for happiness. Refrain from acquiring possessions or people who belong to somebody else. This is a time to build bridges, not burn them. Women can be especially helpful in promoting your agenda. Ask a wise older woman for advice on the quickest road to success.
.
Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Playing cat and mouse has very little appeal. You’re the type to wear your heart on your sleeve. If you’ve been harbouring a crush on someone, it’s time to go public with it. Be sure to nurture the courtship phase of your romance. Rushing into a serious commitment will deprive you of a fantastic, playful experience. Are you already in a relationship? Whisk your lover away to a secluded waterside retreat where you will rediscover your passion for each other.
.
Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) Do everything in your power to help friends and the weaker members of your community. You have a great deal of influence with the authorities. By discussing their needs, you’ll be able to rescue a library, park, or community centre that is in danger of being cut. Alternatively, you could spearhead a fundraiser that will make up for any financial shortfalls this organisation is suffering. It gives you great pleasure to make a positive difference in the world.
.
Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) You long to work in an unstructured environment, where your creativity can run free. Fortunately, an imposing authority figure has faith in your ability. Resist the temptation to test your boss’s limits. By showing respect for their position, you’ll be given free rein with your own duties. There’s a chance colleagues will be jealous of your position, so take pains to be popular and friendly. The more allies you have, the greater your success will be.
.
Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) To achieve the status you want, you’ll have to work harder. Whether you’re writing a book or pursuing a challenging career, you’ll have to formulate a long range plan. Don’t deviate it, especially when the chips are down. Lack of focus has held you back in the past. Having a respected mentor hold you accountable can help. Ask a former teacher or wise relative to assist you on this journey. Be willing to hear their brutally honest assessments of your efforts.
