BBC News - Discerning buyers lead surge in 'boutique' gin sales + 150%.

In the eighteenth century gin was popular among the poor and often called 'mother's ruin'. But now, traditional gin distilleries are make something of a comeback.

The resurgence is being led by discerning buyers in search of an exclusive product - and it has caused sales of boutique style gins to rocket by 150%.

Council tenants who sub-let their homes will face up to two years in prison under proposals by the government.

The plans would see a new criminal offence of tenancy fraud, with a fine of up to £50,000 also possible.

Officials estimate that 160,000 tenants sub-let their homes to other people at cost of £5bn a year to the taxpayer.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps said some people were cheating the system by earning thousands of pounds letting out their council homes at markets rents.

Reuters also reports Dell (NYSE:DELL) intends to launch its first consumer tablet computer in late 2012. Reuters also reports New York state's financial regulator is investigating a number of major banks, including Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) and Citigroup (NYSE:C), on whether they overcharged customers on force-place insurance. Finally, Bloomberg reports French drugmaker Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) is planning “bolt-on” acquisitions of up to $2.6B this year, says CEO Chris Viehbacher.

USA - 10-year anniversary highlights Obama's Guantanamo failure

A total of 779 prisoners have passed through the naval base since it started holding prisoners suspected of having links to al-Qaeda after the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2002. Today 171 detainees are still kept there.

But the former Republican house speaker is vowing to fight on against front runner Mitt Romney in South Carolina's primary on January 21st.

Gingrich picked up just short of 10 per cent of the vote in New Hampshire and he's labelled South Carolina as a "must-win" state
