However, Tess's innate tragic flaw in character also brings about her tragedy. She is  too innocent  . Her guilty feeling of her sin and her complete obedience to Angel Clare as her husband also display her weakness in character.

One of the original reasons for censorship was that  Hardy was breaking the sexual norms of his society, and challenging the sexual double standard that existed  . He proclaimed to all that the rape of Tess, his epitome of nature, made her no less a good woman than those in "decent" society.Sep 29, 2011

Hardy's subtitle, A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented, gets to the heart of her intentions. First, even though Tess would be considered a fallen, impure woman by most of her society, Hardy wants  to redefine purity  . Innocent Tess is raped and impregnated at 15 and gives birth to an illegitimate child who dies.Sep 1, 2011

One main idea in Tess of the d'Urbervilles that was considered controversial when the book came out is  empathy for women facing unfeeling moral hypocrisy in Victorian England  . The novel presents Tess as a victim of the time in which she lives; both men and society treat her unkindly and unfairly.Apr 7, 2023

Woolbridge Manor, on which Wellbridge House, in Tess of the d'Urbervilles , is based, can be found just outside the village of Wool in Dorset.
