This African tale follow the rhythms of director Carroll Ballard's earlier films The Black Stallion and Fly Away Home, namely a child is drawn into the mysteries and magic of an animal. Xan (newcomer Alexander Michaletos) is a 12-year-old living in South Africa with his parents (Campbell Scott and Hope Davis, who appeared as a much different couple three years earlier in The Secret Life of Dentists) when they find an abandoned baby cheetah. They bring it up as their own and name it the Swahili word for cheetah, Duma. After some time, the creature is too big to stay domesticated and Dad tells the boy they will have to journey back to Duma's home to set him free. A sickness makes the family pull up stakes and head to the city where Xan and Duma don't fare well. Xan must take Duma on his own to set him free. To tell more would be a crime. As with any Ballard film, the story is subtext, the visuals rule. First-time cinematographer Werner Maritz fills the screen with the desert landscape and is able to capture the magnificent speed of the cheetah. Ballard's films seem to build on their own inertia, creating scenes that seem to be simply happening instead of scripted, although this often suffers in the balance of wonderment versus all-too-lucky occurrences. Based on the children's picture book/memoir How It Was with Dooms by Xan and Carol Cawthra Hopcraft, this is a film worth seeking out, especially for families and kids above 5 years old. --Doug Thomas

Product Description

Carroll Ballard (The Black Stallion, Fly Away Home) directs the exciting story of 12-year-old Xan (Alexander Michaletos), who decides to return the cheetah he raised from a cub to the wild instead of allowing pursuers to place it in captivity. Harsh South African landscapes, stalking lions, crocodiles, river rapids and a mysterious drifter (Eamonn Walker) who may intend to turn the big cat in for cash - all will test Xan's courage and resolve. Join him in this tale of growing up and letting go. It's a journey you won't want to miss.

Aries (Mar21/Apr20) Seize this opportunity to apply to college or university. An influential friend or colleague will be happy to write you a letter of recommendation. Studying abroad will be especially enjoyable. You will love the challenge of exploring an exotic city and making it your temporary home. Best of all, you'll attract lots of romantic attention in this foreign land. If you're single, you won't be by the time you return home. Keep your eyes open for an attractive suitor who loves the great outdoors.
 .
Taurus (Apr21/May21) It's time to attend to your long term financial future. Setting up a savings, retirement, or college account is critical to your wellbeing. Although you love luxuries, you enjoy security even more. That means cutting back on extravagant purchases will be less odious than you think, provided you keep your goals at the forefront of your mind. At first, your meagre savings won't seem very impressive. Over time, though, this small fund will grow into a sizable nest egg, and you'll be the envy of all your friends.
 .
Gemini (May22/Jun21) Dealing with the public improves your romantic and business prospects. People are drawn to your energy and enthusiasm. Somehow, you infuse even the most boring subjects with excitement. If you're single, you will have a chance to embark on a committed relationship. A suitor who loves animals will pursue you with an ardour that is thrilling. Be elusive at first; your admirer loves the thrill of the chase.
 .
Cancer (Jun22/Jul23) Spending more time outdoors will improve your health as you have a tendency to work too hard. Sitting hour after hour behind a desk makes you tired and irritable. Force yourself to go out for brisk walks at lunch. At first, it will annoy you to change gears. After a few outings, though, you'll look forward to the exercise and it will become second nature. Eating nutritious meals will give you a sexy glow, too. Cut back on the fat and sugar and opt for fresh fruits and vegetables instead.
 .
Leo (Jul24/Aug23) Finally, a chance to let your hair down and have fun. Lately, you've been spending all of your time with family. While you've enjoyed taking care of your nearest and dearest, you long to venture out of the house and forget your responsibilities. Going on a pleasure trip will be a wonderful diversion. It will also put you on the path to romance. If you're single, you'll have a casual fling you'll never forget. Your amour will give your confidence a terrific boost, making you feel sexy and desirable.
 .
Virgo (Aug24/Sep23) Spending more time at home reminds you what is really important. Although you love spending time with friends, flitting from party to party is exhausting. Take this opportunity to clean the clutter from your surroundings and make it a cosy haven. Don't be surprised if you feel the sudden urge to cook. Experimenting with new recipes appeals to your creative side. There's the added advantage of being able to devour all these delicious meals with the people you love.
 .
Libra (Sep24/Oct23) Your social life is going at warp speed. It will be difficult to make the rounds of all the parties, dinners, and dance clubs ahead, but you'll somehow manage. All these delightful distractions give you a new lease on life. If there's anything you hate, it's getting stuck in a dull routine. Taking a class will be especially pleasurable, as your fellow students will be a vivacious bunch who are always looking for fun. Don't be surprised if you start falling for someone with fantastic legs.
 .
Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) A series of business trips will keep you busy and fortunately, your employer is prepared to put you up in style. You'll enjoy forging deals over sumptuous dinners in elegant restaurants. If you're unemployed, this would be a great time to find work related to the law, publishing, or travel. Your knack for research makes you a valuable asset to your employer. Be sure to emphasise this skill during job interviews. It will give you a distinct edge on the competition.
 .
Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Lecturing, teaching, and writing are all ways to make your mark on the world. People enjoy your breezy communication style, and are willing to pay good money to hear your thoughts. At first, you might have to take an unpaid position as a means to prove yourself. Don't worry; your talent will become immediately apparent to the powers that be. Soon you'll be offered a handsome salary to share your wit and wisdom with the world. Keep your eyes open for an important letter, email, or text.
 .
Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) Listen to your intuition, as it will help you make the best decisions regarding a romance. A secret love affair is thrilling, but it's compromising other relationships. You must either come clean or break things off. Living in the shadows is not for you. If you're hiding someone else's secret, put an end to it. You don't have to expose your friend, but you should stop providing alibis. Putting your feelings in writing will be a helpful relief from anxiety.
 .
Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) A group outing provides the stimulation you crave. Head for some glorious retreat where you can enjoy the beauties of nature. Horse riding, hiking, and biking help forge a link between your mind and body. Too often, you get snarled in your own thoughts. By heading outside, you're able to put problems back in proper perspective. Stop taking problems so seriously. There's no dilemma you can't solve after taking a brisk walk. It sounds simplistic, but it's true.
 .
Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) Don't be shy about sharing your ideas as people are eager to hear your suggestions. Your ability to create beauty and comfort wherever you go is your greatest strength. Devise a plan for making a forbidding waiting room or gathering space more relaxing. This will attract more clients and result in some lucrative business deals. If you're thinking of becoming your own boss, now is the time to do so. You have wonderful instincts about what products and services people want.
