Oil Prices Threaten Russian Economy: Falling prices raise fears of recession

Russia's economy could be in for further trouble. Economists are predicting that the low price of oil could lead Russia into recession as Western sanctions bite. The declining price of oil has made it more difficult for Russia to withstand sanctions from Western countries. The Russian ruble has plummeted in recent weeks to its lowest point ever against the dollar.

At least 30 hikers are feared dead in Japan after being found in a lifeless state near the peak of a volcano that erupted a day earlier.

Japanese authorities never confirm death until after a medical examination.

Dozens of others were injured or are missing.

Hundreds of people including children were stranded on Mount Ontake, some 200 kilometres west of Tokyo, after it suddenly erupted on Saturday.

A police officer has been shot and injured in Ferguson, the American town where the police killing of a young black man sparked riots in August. Police say the officer was chasing suspected burglars when one turned and shot him in the arm. They did not comment on his condition. The shooting is not thought to be connected to separate protests in the Missouri town going on at the same time.
