Libya - Benghazi call for autonomy could split country

Published on Mar 6, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Civic leaders in the eastern city of Benghazi have announced plans for greater autonomy from Libya's Transitional Council based in Tripoli.

Three thousand delegates voted in a relative of Libya's former king to head a new council, set up to administer their own affairs. The declaration puts them on a confrontation course with the country's interim leadership.

Speaking in Tripoli NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel-Jalil warned of a foreign plot to break up the country. He said: "As the National Transitional Council we are surprised at these voices calling for division in Libya. We call on all Libyans to gather round the internationally legitimate Council."

The creation of the so-called Federal Union includes the province of Cyrenaica which is home to Libya's biggest oil fields. But not everyone approves of the unilateral move.

People in Benghazi itself are split as several hundred demonstrators held a rally in protest in the city centre. Their banners read, 'no to federalism; no to regionalism; yes to a unified Libya'.Find us on:

France - Sarkozy vows to cut the number of foreigners in France

Published on Mar 6, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ French President Nicolas Sarkozy has vowed to cut the number of immigrants and impose a minimum tax on the profits of big listed companies if he's re-elected in April.

The remarks were made as he sought to bolster support for his presidential campaign during a TV grilling from the veteran Socialist Laurent Fabius.

He was also asked to defend his record:

"It's up to the French to judge," said Sarkozy.
"They will ask if during the crisis, did I protect them? With the events that have crashed down with an unheard of violence on the world, on Europe and on France.... have I done my job well, or have I done it badly? And would Mr Francois Hollande have done any better?"

But Laurent Fabius's retorted : "No! It's WILL he do better."

The debate which was testy and barbed at times, comes as Sarakozy is struggling in the polls against his socialist rival. Francois Hollande who launched his campaign months before Sarkozy and has promised a popular wealth tax, is tipped to beat him in a run-off in May.Find us on:
