Syria - holds funerals for Damascus bombing victims

Published on Jan 7, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.net/ Amid a show of support for Syria's government, thousands have been paying their last respects to the 26 people killed in Friday's explosion in Damascus.

As a mass funeral was held, the state continued to blame 'terrorists' for what it said was a suicide bombing. Security personnel as well as civilians were killed, according to authorities.

But some opponents claim the regime itself staged the attack, to try to show it was fighting blind violence rather than a pro-democracy movement.

The French skipper and his crew of 13 had good reason to pop a few corks of bubbly. They cut nearly three days off the previous mark to win the Jules Verne Trophy.

The 40-metre Maxi Banque Populaire V trimaran crossed the line of departure having circumnavigated the globe in 45 days, 13 hours and 42 minutes.

French skipper Franck Cammas, who held the previous record, is currently competing in the Volvo Ocean Race.
