Columbia - Giant outdoor escalator built in Medellin's Comuna 13 district "shantytown"

http://www.euronews.net/ A huge outdoor escalator has been unveiled in one of the poorest districts of Colombia's second largest city.

Until now residents of Medellin's Comuna 13 district have had to climb hundreds of steps to get around the shantytown, which clings to the side of a steep hill. Journey times will be reduced from over half an hour to six minutes.

"It's wonderful, it's a dream come true, and I was one of the first to use it," said one local woman delightedly.

Several hundred people are still missing and the final toll is likely to be much higher than the current figure of almost 1,500.

Many bodies are still thought to be buried in the mud and debris left behind after torrents of water cascaded through coastal and riverside areas on Mindanao island in mid-December.

North Korea - Kim Jong-un sheds tears at wake for dead father

Police believe the 18-year-old died after rivalry between two groups of teenagers turned violent.

As many as 11 people were arrested following the stabbing, just hours after stores re-opened from the Christmas holidays.

Tens of thousands of people battled against a public transport strike in the British capital to reach the first day of the sales.

But in the last year, the number of people out of work has climbed by more than 5 percent.

New figures suggest in November alone, an extra 30,000 people were looking for work taking the overall unemployment figure to a 12 year high of 9.3 percent.

The under-25s and over-50s are the worst affected. 53-year-old Isabelle Léger is a former engineer who has been out of work for two years.

Felipe Cabrera was paraded in front of the media following his capture in the northwestern state of Sinaloa.
