On Sunday morning he met unions who have been concerned that poorer workers and pensioners will be hit hard.

A cabinet meeting was brought forward to Sunday afternoon to approve the plan, which goes before parliament on Monday.

It is thought a mix of cuts and tax rises in the new austerity plan will try to save nearly 25 billion euros over two years.

The Iranian military claims to now have possession of the unmanned American spy plane named as an RQ10 model, after bringing it down with minimal damage.

A report on Iranian station Press TV stated: "Military sources say with this is clear violation of Iran's air space. The electronic operations of the Iranian armed forces to locate enemy aerial vehicles will not be limited to the country's borders anymore."
