Members of the German lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, have backed her call to boost the euro zone's rescue fund.

The bill was expected to pass as her centre-right government agreed a joint motion on the plans with the opposition Social Democrats and Greens.

Today's win for the Chancellor bolsters her negotiating strength at the emergency EU summit in Brussels later to tackle the euro debt crisis.
