Kanasemba Kudureyaneri

Plot

A story has a beginning, middle and an end, but it's not necessary that they be in the same order. Girish Kasarvalli's award- winning film Kanasemba Kudureyaneri (based on Amaresh Nugadoni's Savaari) is a classic example of this.
.
The film applies a back and forth narrative to tell the story of gravedigger Irya and his belief in Siddhas, nomads whose arrival is considered auspicious. It is believed that if the death of a person coincides with the arrival of a Siddha, the soul is sure to go to heaven.
.
Irya and his wife are made known of their arrival through dreams. In fact for Irya, if a Siddha appears in his dream, it denotes a death in the village. However, once despite dreaming of a Siddha, Irya is told that there is no death in the village. He goes to the house of an ailing village elder, anticipating his death, but is sent back by the house caretaker saying all is well.
.
As if this is not enough, a Siddha not arriving in the village despite his wife having dreamt of his arrival, crushes Irya's faith in Siddhas, whom he believes are his protectors. Is Irya just an easy prey to superstitions, or are scheming villagers exploiting his dreams for their own good?
.
The film beautifully exposes the materialistic attitude of people. It leaves you wondering whether destroying one's beliefs is the only way to progress; whether there are chances of beliefs being mistaken for superstitions just because the ones who hold these beliefs are not part of the mainstream.
.
While the first half of the film may have you raise your brows at Irya's and his wife Rudri 's dreams and faith, the second half sets out to suggest that what may look superstitious to one may be a way of life to the other. It also shows how sometimes what looks real may be unreal and vice versa, and that with faith in our beliefs, we can achieve anything.
.
Kasarvalli's use of non-linear narrative for the first time succeeds in building the audience's curiosity. V Manohar's music and Ramachandra Halikere's camera work complement the story.

Rounded up with the other women from the village and imprisoned in a warehouse in a remote region of Bosnia, she quickly learns the rules of camp life. The day she is picked out to 'entertain' the soldiers, the real nightmare begins. Stripped of everything she ever had and facing the constant threat of death, she struggles against all the hatred she sees around her. In a final act of courage or madness, she decides to make one last stand: to dare to be herself. And this simple act saves her life. Nader and Simin, A Separation

Plot

Nader and Simin have been married for fourteen years and live with their eleven-year-old daughter Termeh in Tehran. The family belongs to the urban upper middle-class and the couple are on the verge of separation. Simin wants to leave the country with her husband and daughter, as she does not want Termeh to grow up under the prevailing conditions. Her desire is not shared by Nader. He has concerns for his father, who lives with the family and suffers from Alzheimer's disease. When Nader firmly decides to stay in Iran, Simin files for a divorce.
.
The Family Court judges the couple's problems not to be grave enough and rejects Simin's application. Simin then leaves her husband and daughter and moves in with her mother. Nader hires Razieh, a young, pregnant and deeply religious woman from a poor suburb, selected by his wife, to be able to better take care of his father. Razieh has applied for the job without consulting her hot-tempered husband Hodjat, whose approval according to tradition would have been needed. Her family is however financially dependent on the work, and she brings her daughter with her.
.
Razieh soon becomes overworked by taking care of Nader's father and does not receive much pay. She becomes unsure whether her religion allows her to wash the old man who suffers from incontinence. Sooner or later she plans to pass the position to her husband, who is prevented because of debts to his creditors.
.
As Razieh one day needs to leave for a doctor's appointment, she ties the man to his bed and locks him in. However the man falls out of his bed and is discovered unconscious by Nader and Termeh. Outraged, Nader shoves Razieh out of the apartment when she arrives and calls her a criminal, whereupon she falls in the stairwell and loses her unborn child in the fourth month of pregnancy.
.
A court is assigned to determine Nader's guilt. If it can be proved that he had knowledge of Razieh's pregnancy, he will be charged for murder. At the same time Razieh is accused of abusing the old man. The rough and depressive Hodjat has to decide if Nader will face a prison sentence for murder attempt of Hodjat's unborn son or if Nader should pay a financial compensation. Nader's pride prevents him from paying the blood money, whereupon Termeh, Razieh's husband and a teacher in the school are heard.
.
Termeh protects her father with a false statement, while Simin contributes to the truth outside the court: she approaches Razieh, who refuses to swear on the Qur'an, in the street. Termeh's hope that her parents will reconcile is not fulfilled. She must decide before the Family Court whether she now wants to live with Nader or Simin.
