Russell Grant’s Daily Horoscopes: Friday 15th April 2011

.
Aries (Mar21/Apr20) You instinctively know how to say and do the right things today even if it means being brazenly outspoken! Others are looking to you for leadership in a group situation even if this concerns a matter you have little experience with. Don’t be surprised to find yourself managing a team. They may want you to know the technical details and you don’t so it’s difficult for them and difficult for you. Providing you are honest, you will obtain the information you need. Everything you do will be done well.
 .
Taurus (Apr21/May21) An early morning disagreement could leave you feeling nervy and under stress all day. Try to shake out of this mood and put this argument behind you. Make a point of relaxing if you can. Take some time away from a tense environment to help the process if need be. If you and your partner aren’t getting on, tension could mount almost to the point of one of you wanting to walk out. Don’t let it get so far. Give each other space while you both calm down.
 .
Gemini (May22/June21) You can’t take back the words you say and you could say some things you will heartily wish you hadn’t. For this reason, think before you speak. A joke could backfire when the wrong person overhears what they feel is a tasteless remark. To avoid mix ups in communication it will pay to think a little more before opening your mouth. Career and business matters will require more attention and care.
 .
Cancer (June22/July23) If you’re experimenting with new ideas, the possibility of it all going wrong is there, but why worry? You know the score and you should be preparing yourself for all possible consequences. Don’t look on it as a failure if you happen to meet a few problems. You should see this as a means of learning as you go. You need to guard against the temptation to give up too quickly. To get the best out of opportunities coming your way, keep one word in mind and that is: perseverance.
 .
Leo (July24/Aug23) What’s ailing you now is the knowledge you aren’t making the best use of your skills and talents. Irrespective of the results and achievements you’re currently enjoying, deep inside you know you could do much better. Both mentally and physically you want and need to stretch yourself more. You’re ready to sail into a tricky project and meet all challenges involved quickly and efficiently. Even if you must be pushy in order to grab this opportunity.
 .
Virgo (Aug24/Sept23) You aren’t enamoured by your usual routines; you’re not keen either on alternative ideas suggested for spending the day. If you take a friend’s offer of getting involved in a community endeavour, you could encounter an unwelcome atmosphere of discord and obstruction. Refrain from taking sides too early in any venture. You could make the mistake of thinking others are ganging up on you by talking about you behind your back. People admire your fortitude even if they don’t support your cause.
 .
Libra (Sept24/Oct23) There will be times when it won’t be easy to show patience and tolerance. In fact you might find yourself biting your lips so many times that when you do eventually comment, you will say far more than you meant to. Something silly and meaningless might seem to spark off your temper but people don’t realise how you’ve been holding your emotions back all day long. The more you tuck yourself out of sight, the happier you will be!
 .
Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) You could be bringing down the emotional shutters to ward off a person you feel is going to be difficult to get on with. Whether it is shyness or uncertainty holding you back from getting too deeply involved with someone, you are allowing first impressions to influence your thinking. They could well be your soulmate yet you are pushing them away. Think of the joys you will miss out on by not giving this relationship a go.
 .
Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) News of a forthcoming birth, and engagement or the sound of wedding bells is in the air. If there have been a few problems in the family, a more acceptable scene appears as from today. Cooperation and friendliness are the dominant themes now. People are far happier than they have been of late and this aura will put you at your ease too. Even colleagues will be in a sunnier mood, making work a pleasure! The day is set to end on a delightfully romantic note.
 .
Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) You can breathe out a sigh of relief over a career issue that has occupied your thoughts for some time. A colleague has decided to leave but not because they are being pushed out. This is their choice and they feel they are moving on to bigger and better things. If you feel you’ve been in the same situation for long enough, it might not be long before you follow their example. After all, no experience is wasted if you’re willing to move forward with your dreams.
 .
Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) Avoid work that involves only yourself; progress will be made through group efforts and pooled knowledge. You sparkle wherever you happen to be and everyone wants to be near you. People will be dropping in on you unannounced and any resentment you feel at this intrusion will quickly give way to something more positive. Even so you could end the day feeling worn right out through an overdose of socialising!
 .
Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) If it feels like you’re living the same day over and over; you want and in fact need more excitement from life. Things have got repetitive. Find the strength of mind to pull yourself free of your usual routines. Try things you’ve never done before. Go for new experiences and through these you will discover what you need to have fun. Sign up for a class where you can meet like minded people. This should give you the chance to expand your mind and widen your social circle at the same time.

#havejustwatchedONtv - "The Duellists" director Ridley Scott's first feature. Best Debut Film award at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival

The trailer for the 1977 Ridley Scott's version of Joseph Conrad's story

The Duellists

Plot

Set during the Napoleonic Wars, it features two French Hussar officers, Armand d'Hubert (Keith Carradine) and Gabriel Féraud (Harvey Keitel). A misunderstanding between them over an initially minor incident becomes a quarrel that turns into a bitter, long-drawn out feud over the following fifteen years, interwoven with the larger conflict that provides its backdrop. At the beginning, Féraud is the one who jealously guards his honour and repeatedly demands satisfaction anew when a duelling encounter ends inconclusively; he aggressively pursues every opportunity to locate and duel with his foe. The Hussars were stationed at Ausburg Germany initially.

As the story progresses, d'Hubert also finds himself caught up in the contest. He is unable to refuse Féraud's repeated challenges to duel or to walk away because of the rigid code of honour. The feud persists through the different campaigns of the Napoleonic war, and on into the period of the Bourbon restoration which follows. When the story begins, both men are lieutenants, and over time both rise through the ranks to reach the rank of General.

At times, Feraud and d'Hubert meet but are of different rank in the army, which due to army regulations prevents them from duelling, but whenever both are of the same rank and in the same place, Feraud immediately issues a challenge. Each comes close to fatally wounding the other, d'Hubert being critically wounded in a duel with small swords, Féraud later being slashed in a joust on horseback with cavalry sabres and both of them nearly killing each other in an inconclusive combat with heavy sabres inside a barn. During the retreat from Moscow, another duel (this time with pistols) almost takes place, but the two must act together to survive when they are attacked by Cossacks.

After the fall of Napoleon, d'Hubert marries and becomes a respected member of the restored aristocracy and a General of Brigade in the new French Army, while Féraud is an embittered member of the anti-monarchist party. Poor and despised, he rejoins Napoleon after the Emperor escapes from Elba (while d'Hubert refuses to take part in Napoleon's return), but his hopes are dashed after the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon's final exile to St. Helena. Forced to live under supervised conditions in a country village (unknown to Feraud, d'Hubert, by interceding with Minister Joseph Fouche, was responsible for Feraud's not being executed for being "a rabid Bonapartist"), Feraud still tracks d'Hubert down and challenges him, although he no longer truly remembers, or has conveniently altered, the reason for the perceived injury to his honour.

The final duel is a pursuit through a ruin with each of the protagonists armed with a pair of duelling pistols. When Féraud misses his second shot, d'Hubert immediately seizes the initiative and corners Féraud at gunpoint. Féraud is completely defenceless, with no hope of escape. However, instead of firing, d'Hubert coldly informs Féraud that he has decided to spare his life – on condition that, since according to the rules of single combat Feraud's life now belongs to d'Hubert, Féraud conducts himself in future as a "dead" person and must never have any further contact whatsoever with d'Hubert ever again. Féraud has no choice but to submit to these terms and he departs from the scene. The film ends showing d'Hubert happily married and expecting his first child and Féraud contemplating the fact that he can no longer pursue the obsession which has consumed him for so many years.
