Syria - peace plan acceptance "a first step" multi-party peace talks, troop withdrawal, humanitarian aid...

Published on Mar 27, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Western nations cautiously welcomed Syria's acceptance of a United Nations-Arab League peace plan on Tuesday. Germany's ambassador to the UN Peter Wittig described the decision as "a first step in the right direction".

Damascus approved the proposals as international envoy Kofi Annan met with Chinese leaders in Beijing to win support from one of Syria's staunchest allies.

The plan includes multi-party peace talks, troop withdrawal, humanitarian aid and improved media access.

But even as proposals for peace got the green light, Syrian troops entered parts of north Lebanon in pursuit of rebels who they claim were hiding in farm buildings. Residents said soldiers destroyed one house with a bulldozer.

Local security sources have confirmed that the incursions, of a few hundred metres, occurred and that clashes took place. Lebanese troops sealed off the area.

Meanwhile the UN revised to more than 9000, the number of people killed since the beginning of the bloody revolt.
