http://www.euronews.com/ An American soldier has killed or wounded at least a dozen civilians in southern Afghanistan after having a breakdown, according to reports.

He's said to have left his base in Kandahar province and opened fire. The NATO-led coalition says he's been arrested, describing the event as 'deeply regrettable'.

The precise number of victims is difficult to verify at this stage. It comes at a time when anti-American sentiment is already running high.

Israel - strike 'kills Palestinian boy' in new Gaza assault

Published on Mar 11, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ A 12-year-old Palestinian boy has been killed in a third successive day of Israeli strikes on Gaza, according to local medical sources.

Another person was injured. It brings to 17 the number of dead in the Israeli bombardment since Friday.

The death of a Palestinian militant whose car was targeted by Israeli forces in Gaza City has sparked the worst violence the area has seen for almost a year, with Israel on the receiving end of sustained rocket attacks.

The Israeli army confirmed strikes have been carried out and said it was checking reports that a boy had died.

He's said to have been killed in northern Gaza. A Palestinian militant reportedly died in a separate attack.

The escalating violence has brought calls for a ceasefire from the UN, the EU, the Palestinian Authority and Egypt.

Militant groups in Gaza, vowing revenge for the Israeli strikes, have fired more than 100 rockets into southern Israel since Friday.

Six people have been injured, one seriously. The police say several more projectiles have been fired into Israeli territory on Sunday.

Some 25 were intercepted on Saturday before they landed in Israel, according to the military.

The country's defence minister Ehud Barak said its defence system had proved its effectiveness, adding that Israel would strike all those who target Israeli civilians.

Anti-nuclear rallies in Europe a year after Fukushima

Published on Mar 11, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Anti-nuclear demonstrations in Europe have marked the one year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

In France, nearly 700 people, half of them Germans, called for the closure of Fessenheim, the oldest of the French nuclear plants.

In Madrid, activists formed a human chain in front of the Japanese Embassy, to demand the end of nuclear energy and show support for Japanese victims.

Polish protesters also made their voices heard.
They said 'No way' after the government gave the green light to build the first nuclear power plant in the country.

Japan - marks quake and tsunami anniversary 19,000 dead or missing.

Published on Mar 11, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Exactly a year on from the enormously destructive earthquake and tsunami, Japan is remembering.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko led a minute of silence in Tokyo's National Theatre at the precise moment that the 9.0 magnitude tremor unleashed a wall of water that ravaged the northeast coast, killing thousands.

Across the country memorial services are being held. Japan is still dealing with the emotional fallout from the disaster, as well as the economic and nuclear aftermath.

Residents from the abandoned town of Okuma returned home for a few hours to pay their respects to those lost 12 months ago.

It's the location of four of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's reactors.

Radiation means the area remains uninhabitable. Tens of thousands were made homeless after a 20 kilometre exclusion zone was set up around the plant.

The impact of the nuclear crisis spread far beyond. The disaster exposed serious flaws in safety standards and regulations.

Once again the terrible images of the ocean invading the land are prominent in people's minds, as Japan slowly recovers from the tragedy that left some 19,000 dead or missing.
