Alain Juppé met the veteran activist at her lakeside home where she spent almost two decades under house arrest.

Later he was due to bestow Suu Kyi with the French Legion of Honour.

Juppé's visit to Myanmar or Burma, the first ever by a French foreign minister, follows those of his American and British counterparts.

The UN says his crackdown has claimed more than 5,000 lives during a 10-month-old uprising.

Ban was speaking in Lebanon at a conference on democratic transitions in the Arab World.

Hungary - Far-right Jobbik party burns EU flag and demands exit from bloc

Some 2,000 demonstrators from the extremist Jobbik party gathered outside the European Commission offices in Budapest.

They are angry that cash-strapped Hungary is under pressure to ditch new legislation that Brussels says may violate European laws and principles.

"Not only us but many other countries now believe they could be better off outside the EU and then they would not have got into this situation," said protester Gyorgy Lillik, 63.

The longstanding leader has consistently put economic growth before democratic reform, and previous elections have been criticised by international observers.

For the first time, the second-placed party will be automatically guaranteed seats in parliament. But commentators see little likelihood of a shift in the balance of power.

China - Premier Wen Jiabao seeks energy security in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is already Beijing's biggest source of imported oil.

China also buys a lot from Iran but is thought to be concerned about future supplies amid international tension over the Islamic Republic's nuclear work.

Tehran has threatened to block a vital Gulf shipping route if sanctions are imposed on its oil exports. It has warned Arab neighbours not to raise their output in the event of an EU embargo.
