Two men died and 61 other people were injured Thursday in a pre-dawn pileup involving about 40 cars, vans and other vehicles on a busy interstate that crosses New Orleans, closing the route for hours both ways, police said. (Dec. 29)

Giovanni Valentin died on Christmas Eve from burns received when he lit a fire to keep warm on the streets of Bulzano.

The 66-year-old kept quiet about roughly half a million euros in cash and property that his mother had left him a year earlier.

A family friend told a local newspaper that Valentin thought that living on the streets was the only way he could feel free.

It's hoped Valentin's estate will be used to help other homeless people.

Russia - A fire has broken out at a shipyard where a Russian nuclear submarine is being repaired.

The blaze at Roslyakovo dock in the northern Murmansk region spread to the sub's hull.

Officials say there has been no radiation leak from the vessel and all weapons had been removed before it entered the dock.

The head of Russia's Left Front movement has been put in prison 14 times this year, most recently ahead of December 4th legislative elections.

Udaltsov has made three court appearances since then and each time his jail term has been extended.

His supporters say the reasons for prolonging his sentence have been falsified:

Preliminary results show the opposition People's National Party, led by Portia Simpson Miller, has scored a landslide victory in national elections.

The PNP looks set to win 42 of the 63 parliamentary seats.

Simpson Miller first became PM in 2006.

Incumbent Andrew Holness only took office in October this year following the surprising resignation of his predecessor.

Turkey - Kurdish anger at northern Iraq military blunder

Officials admitted that an air strike over northern Iraq, which was supposed to hit Kurdish rebels from the PKK, may have killed 35 civilian smugglers instead.

In Istanbul, clashes broke out as protesters hurled stones at the police. Many chanted anti-government slogans.

A spokesperson for Turkey's ruling party said the air raid error was "saddening":
