India - Anna Hazare, starts a 3 day hunger strike today because anti-corruption bill does not go far enough

Published on Dec 27, 2011 by
http://www.euronews.net/ India's parliament is considering changing the anti-corruption bill, but that does not go far enough according to activist Anna Hazare, who begins a three-day hunger strike on Tuesday.

Dissatisfied with the weak legislation, Hazare has also threatened to protest against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ruling Congress Party.

The Lokpall bill would create an anti-corruption ombudsman, and the prime minister has appealed for all parties to support the measure, but Hazare claims this will not be enough to stamp out fraud.

But on the other side of the shop windows, it is another story. Shop floor workers are among the lowest paid, even here, in London's glittering Oxford Street.

Ethiopia - Two Swedish journalists jailed for 11 years in Ethiopia for aiding rebels

Published on Dec 27, 2011 by
http://www.euronews.net/ Two Swedish journalists have been jailed for 11 years in Ethiopia for entering the country illegally and helping an outlawed rebel group.

Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson were arrested after crossing the border from Somalia with members of the Ogaden National Liberation Front.

The pair denied aiding the rebels but admitted entering Ethiopia without permission. The court in Addis Ababa was told they had contacted the rebels as part of a news story into a Swedish oil company's activities in the region.
