Libya's new rulers say Abdullah al-Senussi, Gaddafi's brother-in-law, was seized in a southern desert region, apparently at his sister's house.

Senussi was a key figure in the old regime and faces crimes against humanity charges at the Hague-based International Criminal Court.

For the second successive day, riot police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets in a bid to control large crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square. The scenes were reminiscent of the 18-day revolt against Hosni Mubarak in February.

Fighting has also spread to other cities including Alexandria and Suez. Elections are due next week, but many protesters believe the army council is secretly plotting to remain in power.
