Sources close to Rebekah Brooks, who was editor of the Sunday tabloid when Milly went missing, has faced calls for her to resign over spurious claims made that a private detective accessed Milly Dowler's voicemail to get stories for the Sunday rag whilst on her watch.

Ms Brooks however is said to be resisting those calls for her to step down.

Ms Brooks has made it clear in a message to News International staff that she would not by stepping down as chief executive over the allegations.
