Deadliest attack on Ukraine forces as pre-election tension rises

After days of relative calm on Ukraine's 'eastern front', the military has suffered its worst losses there, with at least 14 soldiers killed in a dawn attack on a checkpoint.

Heavily-armed militants are said to have stormed the site south of Donetsk, injuring a further 30 or so troops. Ukrainian security sources are blaming pro-Russian separatists.

Confusion over supposed Russian pullback from Ukraine's borders / Путаница в предполагаемой русской откате от границ Украины

Ukrainian border guards say there has been a decrease in Russian military activity near their border, but NATO and the USA say they have seen no signs that Russian forces have pulled back.

On Monday the Kremlin announced President Vladimir Putin had ordered Russian forces near Ukraine back to their bases.

The White House said it was the third time Moscow had said it had pulled back, and like the last times there was no evidence of a significant withdrawal.

Kyiv pledges extra security in east to safeguard presidential election

The Ukrainian government has promised extra security measures to make sure next Sunday's presidential election goes ahead in the east of the country.

It says it has information on separatist plans to disrupt the elections, with a number of reports of polling staff being kidnapped.

 Donetsk voters uneasy over Ukraine election

Ukrainians are preparing to vote in next week's presidential election. Separatists in the east of the country, however, are trying to disrupt the poll and are forcefully closing down local electoral buildings. In the city of Donetsk, some people said they are too scared to go to the polling stations. Al Jazeera's Kim Vinnell reports from Donetsk.

On the May 25, Poland will vote in the European elections, and Ukraine will choose a new president.

Poles are concerned about the security situation in Ukraine, and Poland has seen increased support for right-wing parties. Meanwhile Ukrainians hope their country will be able to hold the elections and avoid the worst.

Fears about the situation in Ukraine have become a key issue in the EU election campaign in Poland. Experts say it could boost the ruling centre-right government's showing. Unemployment, healthcare reform, and the spending of EU funds have been pushed into the background by criticism of Russia.
