Turkey ready for anti-ISIL role, hints at ground forces - Euronews

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his country needs to take a frontline role in the fightback against ISIL militants in Syria.

Until now Ankara has declined a role in the international coalition, which has frustrated the West.

But admitting that Turkey "can’t stay out" of the counteroffensive, Erdogan also warned that airstrikes wouldn't be enough to "finish off" the militants, hinting that ground forces could be mobilised.

The declining price of oil has made it more difficult for Russia to withstand sanctions from Western countries. The Russian ruble has plummeted in recent weeks to its lowest point ever against the dollar.

At least 30 hikers are feared dead in Japan after being found in a lifeless state near the peak of a volcano that erupted a day earlier.

Japanese authorities never confirm death until after a medical examination.

Dozens of others were injured or are missing.

Hundreds of people including children were stranded on Mount Ontake, some 200 kilometres west of Tokyo, after it suddenly erupted on Saturday.

A police officer has been shot and injured in Ferguson, the American town where the police killing of a young black man sparked riots in August. Police say the officer was chasing suspected burglars when one turned and shot him in the arm. They did not comment on his condition. An uneasy calm is holding in eastern Ukraine, despite reports of continued fighting in some pockets, especially in and around Donetsk.

Since September 5 the two sides have been supposed to respect a ceasefire, but that has been violated on a daily basis, with the Ukrainians complaining that occasionally these have been full-blown attacks on their defensive positions.
In places like Donetsk it is ordinary people who are suffering.

Fresh airstrikes have reportedly hit more suspected fighters from the Islamic State militant movement in Syria.

Five strikes are reported near the Iraqi border and others near the Turkish border.

This as reports in Britain say parliament could be recalled as early as Friday to vote on a plan to join airstrikes also taking place in Iraq.

Euronews - Ukrainian army and rebel troops pull back to create buffer zone

In eastern Ukraine, government troops and pro-Russian rebels have begun withdrawing from frontline positions, according to Ukranian officials. It comes after Ukraine, Russia, and the rebels signed an agreement in the Belurussian capital Minsk last week to create a 30 kilometre buffer zone and pull back heavy artillery. A ceasefire on September 5 had been regularly broken with Ukrainian troops and civilians being killed.
