Greece - officials hopeful of bond swap acceptance

Published on Mar 8, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ In Greece, Thursday was deadline day for a bond swap offer to private creditors. If more than two-thirds accept it it will lead to the release of a 130 billion euros in bailout funds to save the Greek economy.

Hours ahead of the 21:00 CET deadline, holders of nearly 57 percent of the total 206 billion euros in outstanding debt were already committed. They included major banks and pension funds.

"This recapitalisation will be significant and will be necessary as to allow the Greek banking system to extend credit again to the real economy," said Plato Monokroussos, Head of Financial Markets Research at Eurobank, Athens.

It is in the real economy that the money is desperately needed.

New unemployment figures released on Thursday showed Greece's jobless total reached a record 21 percent of the workforce in December. Severe budget cuts have caused a wave of business closures and bankruptcies.

Greece's problems are so severe, it has no credibility to raise money directly from the international financial markets. Analysts say the bond swap is the only way Athens can stave off a default.

Syria - deputy oil minister Abdo Hussameldin quits to join rebels

Published on Mar 8, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ The Syrian government has suffered its highest ranking defection since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began a year ago.

Deputy Oil Minister Abdo Hussameldin quit his post, saying he could not go on "serving the crimes of this regime".

A UN team lead by humanitarian chief Valerie Amos visited the Baba Amr district of Homs yesterday.
Amos said the besieged neighbourhood had been left "pretty devastated" by weeks of shelling.

The United Nations estimates more than 7,500 civilians have died in Syria over the past 12 months.

China's envoy to Syria met with government officials earlier on Thursday to seek an end to the bloodshed.

Beijing has been accused of abetting the violence by blocking two UN resolutions on Syria.

Lu Huaxin said his visit to Damascus was to promote talks between the oppostion and the Assad regime

Australia - Sydney hit by heaviest rainfall in five years

Published on Mar 8, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Sydney has been hit by its heaviest rainfall in five years, shuttering public transport links and prompting dozens of evacuations.

Several major roads have been closed, some train stations have been flooded, and power reportedly cut to around 300 homes.

The downpour follows days of heavy flooding across New South Wales, the state's heaviest in nearly four decades.

Rising water levels have cut the central town of Forbes in three and an evacuation order has now been issued.

The nearby Lachlan river is expected to peak at 10.6 metres later on Thursday.

A levee surrounding Forbes is 11 metres high.

Further south in Wagga Wagga, the flooding has eased slightly but hundreds are still unable to return to their homes
