Nigeria - Islamist extremist group Boko Haram claims fatal Christmas Day bombings against churches

http://www.euronews.net/ The Islamist extremist group Boko Haram have said they carried out a wave of fatal Christmas Day bombings against churches in Nigeria, and have warned there is more to come.

There have been five attacks so far. At least 28 people have been killed and scores more wounded.

The first was just outside the capital Abuja. One eyewitness said the bomb exploded in the middle of St Theresa's church during Christmas Mass. Another said the windows of her house nearby were blown out.

Officials said at least 25 people died in that attack.

Sudan - claims death of prominent Darfur rebel Khalil Ibrahim

http://www.euronews.net/ Sudan's armed forces claim to have killed the leader of the most powerful rebel group in western Darfur, Khalil Ibrahim.

If confirmed Ibrahim's death could be a major blow to his Justice and Equality Movement which refused to sign a peace deal between the government in Khartoum and other rebels fighting in the Darfur region.

An armed forces spokesman said Ibrahim had been with other leaders trying to retreat into Southern Sudan when troops engaged and killed him.

Afghanistan - Suicide bomber targets funeral in the northern city of Taliqan

http://www.euronews.net/ Police in Afghanistan say a suicide bomber has killed at least 20 people and wounded 50 more in the northern city of Taliqan.

The provincial governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa said the bomber struck at a funeral procession.

An MP, Abdul Mutalib, was reported to be among the dead.

The governor said he had been invited to the ceremony but did not go.

He said either he or the MP, Mutalib, might have been the bomber's target.

Greece - Poor and homeless get free meals in Athens

http://www.euronews.net/ Greece is in the fourth year of recession and in Athens temporary centres have been at full stretch trying to bring some Christmas cheer to the poor and homeless.

Dozen of people came to pick up packaged meals, some taking them home, while others stayed to enjoy the music and a little company.

"Unfortunately we have no economic support so that's why we come here," said Dimitra, who came with her mother, and eventually took to the stage for some traditional Greek dances.
