Europe - Bini Smaghi's resignation ends ECB row

http://www.euronews.net/ Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, the Italian on the European Central Bank executive board is quitting to go and teach at Harvard University in the United States.

After another Italian, Mario Draghi, replaced Jean Claude Trichet as head of the ECB, President Nicolas Sarkozy complained there was no French member on the board while Italy had two.

Bini Smaghi's resignation defuses a row between Paris and Rome.

France - under pressure from euro zone woes / sous la pression des malheurs de la zone euro

The cost of borrowing for the euro zone's second largest economy has been creeping up.

Meanwhile Standard & Poor's had to confirm that France's credit rating remains at AAA after the agency erroneously announced that it had been cut

The man, who as central bank governor took Athens into the euro over a decade ago, is now charged with keeping his country inside the single currency.

Papademos said he faced a tough task ahead, but that Greece's problems could be resolved.

"I am convinced that the country's participation in the euro zone is a guarantee of monetary stability," he told reporters.

Λουκάς Παπαδήμος έχει ονομαστεί ως νέου πρωθυπουργού στην Ελλάδα.

Ο άνδρας, ο οποίος ως διοικητής κεντρικής τράπεζας πήρε Αθήνας στη ζώνη του ευρώ πριν από μια δεκαετία, είναι πλέον αναλάβει τη συντήρηση της χώρας του μέσα στο ενιαίο νόμισμα.

Παπαδήμος είπε ότι αντιμετωπίζει ένα δύσκολο έργο μπροστά, αλλά ότι τα προβλήματα στην Ελλάδα θα μπορούσε να επιλυθεί.

"Είμαι πεπεισμένος ότι η συμμετοχή της χώρας στη ζώνη του ευρώ αποτελεί εγγύηση της νομισματικής σταθερότητας», είπε στους δημοσιογράφους.
