Paris, 1828. In the crowd on the Boulevard du Crime, the mime Baptiste Deburau, its mute testimony, save Garance a miscarriage of justice. This one, free and bold woman, ahead of its time, intimidates Deburau that dare not openly declare his love. He married Nathalie, the daughter of the director, believes that without loving. Garance begins an affair with a promising young actor, Frederick Lemaitre, but secretly loves Baptist. After Baptiste invited to come and work at the Theatre des Funambules, Garance is falsely accused of a theft committed by his friend Lacenaire disorder and is forced to accept the protection of the Earl of Montray.

A few years later, Baptiste, married to Natalie, was a great success on the boulevards where he made an art of pantomime recognition and popularity. Frederick also acceded to fame and dream to get Shakespeare. Garance has since become partner of the count, returned to Paris and attended incognito to all representations of the Baptist. One day when he arrives at the home of the Earl of Montray, Lacenaire is driven with contempt. He swears to avenge this humiliation, which he did by discovering the eyes of all Baptiste and Garance kissing - he pulls the curtain that hid the love isolated on a balcony, working once again an effect the theater. But that revenge is not enough: he murders a few days after the Earl of Montray. After their first and only night of love, Garance, which does not destroy the happiness of the little boy had with Nathalie Baptiste, goes, to the despair of the Baptist.
 
Paris, 1828. Dans la foule présente sur le boulevard du Crime, le mime Baptiste Deburau, par son témoignage muet, sauve Garance d'une erreur judiciaire. Celle-ci, femme libre et audacieuse, en avance sur son temps, intimide Deburau qui n'ose pas lui déclarer franchement son amour. Il épouse Nathalie, la fille du directeur, qu'il estime sans l'aimer. Garance entame une liaison avec un jeune acteur prometteur, Frédérick Lemaître, mais aime en secret Baptiste. Après que Baptiste les a invités à venir travailler au Théâtre des Funambules, Garance se trouve injustement accusée d'un vol commis par son trouble ami Lacenaire et est obligée d'accepter la protection du comte de Montray.

Quelques années plus tard, Baptiste, marié à Nathalie, obtient un grand succès sur les boulevards où il a fait de la pantomime un art reconnu et populaire. Frédérick a accédé lui aussi à la célébrité, et rêve de pouvoir monter Shakespeare. Garance, devenue depuis compagne du comte, est revenue à Paris et assiste incognito à toutes les représentations de Baptiste. Un jour alors qu'il se présente à la demeure du comte de Montray, Lacenaire en est chassé avec mépris. Il jure de se venger de cette humiliation, ce qu'il fait en découvrant aux yeux de tous Baptiste et Garance en train de s'embrasser - il tire le rideau qui cachait les amoureux isolés sur un balcon, opérant une fois de plus un effet de théâtre. Mais cette vengeance ne lui suffit pas : il assassine quelques jours après le comte de Montray. Après leur première et unique nuit d'amour, Garance, qui ne veut pas détruire le bonheur du petit garçon que Baptiste a eu avec Nathalie, s'en va, au désespoir de Baptiste.
