The director of festival favorite Ahlaam returns with a road movie across Iraq a land where roads, it seems, are the only things left intact. The gritty, neorealist film is set after the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003. On hearing news that prisoners of war have been found alive in the south of Iraq, a willful young boy follows his just-as-obstinate grandmother on her journey to discover the fate of her missing son, Ahmeds father, who never returned from the Gulf War of 1991. From the mountains of the north to the sands of Babylon, they hitch rides with strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims on all-too-similar journeys. Struggling to understand his grandmothers search, Ahmed follows in the forgotten footsteps of a father he never knew on a journey that will ultimately lead him to come of age. The films cast and crew include many survivors of Saddams regime (lead actress Shazada Hussein is the only woman to have testified at his trial), but the film refuses pity and sensationalism. This is different than the Iraq you see on the news, Al-Daradji says. Its a human Iraq. Plot

1979 - Southall, London, UK. Gurtej Singh Kahlon, 34 years of age has just completed his shift at the Woolfe Rubber Factory. He will slowly walk back home. He will ignore the "gora kid" walking with his mother, pointing at him - the funny "brown" man in the turban. He will cross the street when the group of "white" disgruntled, unemployed factory workers will try and provoke him into a confrontation. He will enter his warm cozy home and sing "happy birthday" to his six year old son Gattu. He will shield his family when the shards of shattering glass will threaten to injure them. He will chase the "gora hoodlums" who threw the rock shattering the glass window. He will break open his "gora skull" with his bare hands. He will protect his family. From now on, he will protect his family.

1994 - Southall, London, UK. Parghat Singh Kahlon (Gattu,) age 17 years old has just given his father Gurtej Singh Kahlon an official letter. He will watch his father read every word. He will watch his fathers eyes brimming with rage. He will hear his father reminding him of the struggle against the "gora's." He will see his father tear his dreams into pieces as the official letter is thrown on his face.

Plot 

On the first of January 1993, two customs officers, one Belgian and the other French, learn of the future closure of their small customs post situated between Corquain in France and Koorkin in Belgium.

Both a hereditary francophobe and an over-zealous Belgian customs officer, Ruben Vandervoorde is forced to create the first franco-Belgian flying squad.

Synopsis
Francophobe de père en fils et douanier belge trop zélé, Ruben Vandervoorde apprend avec désespoir la signature de l’Acte unique en 1986. La libre circulation des marchandises et des personnes met fin aux formalités douanières.

Sept ans plus tard, en 1993, le traité de Maastricht entraîne la fermeture des bureaux de contrôle juxtaposés. Les collègues de Ruben et leurs homologues français apprennent la disparition prochaine de leur petit poste de douane fixe situé dans les communes fictives de Courquain en France et Koorkin en Belgique.

    Ce qui suit dévoile des moments clés de l’intrigue.

Malgré sa francophobie, Ruben Vandervoorde se voit contraint et forcé d'inaugurer la première brigade mobile mixte franco-belge.

Son partenaire français sera Mathias Ducatel, pourtant ennemi de toujours, qui surprend tout le monde en se portant volontaire pour devenir le co-équipier de Vandervoorde et sillonner avec lui les routes de campagne frontalières à bord d'une L d'interception des douanes internationales. Mathias espère ainsi amadouer son voisin de douane avant de lui avouer qu’il est amoureux de sa sœur et qu’ils se fréquentent clandestinement depuis un an.

Plot
