Spain - Mariano Rajoy seeks to calm investor nerves in Spain

Published on Apr 2, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has given his first speech since the government published its 2012 budget last week, promising his austerity policies would create jobs and economic recovery in the end.

It was the country's toughest budget in living memory, but as Rajoy said the worst his government could do would be nothing.

"I'm not here to give the Spanish people good news. Now is the time to establish the foundations for the recovery of the Spanish economy, so that we can soon create new jobs," he insisted.

Pressure remains high on Spanish banks, so although Rajoy can play tough to keep investors happy, the fundamentals remain the same; many sick banks make for an unhealthy economy, and if one should go critical, well, then no-one is sure what will happen.

Others would say the rules by which you run your life are unique. But from your perspective, they're no more than the correct way to deal with others, from those you merely know to those closest. While you can't convert everybody to this approach to living, talking it over will at least get others thinking.

Ireland - Half refuses to pay property tax

Published on Apr 2, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Not since 1977 have the Irish paid property taxes on their principal homes, and they are not enjoying paying them again.

They face fines and being taken to court if they continue to refuse.

Europe - unemployment climbs again

Published on Apr 2, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Unemployment in the eurozone has hit a near-15 year high. Some 17 million Europeans are now jobless, and forecasts are for the jobcentre queues to get even longer throughout the year.

Government's austerity policies are increasingly being questioned on the markets as investors see consumption falling and few signs of any growth areas.

At 10.8% the offical jobless rate hides black spots of over 20% like Spain and other nations, like Austria, where full employment, not unemployment, is the norm. In contrast the USA has been creating jobs since late last year.

A summer of discontent is also being forecast, indeed is promised by the likes of the Occupy and Indignes movements, who last year scored unexpected successes with their protests.

"We, particularly the young people, are here because we have a bleak future and won't have a stable job when we finish studying. It's very sad and that's why we are on the streets," said one young Spaniard in the streets of Madrid.

With no work to do young people are turning out to be quite adept at protest, 21st century style, using social networks and mobile phones to mobilise. Their current plight means many feel there is little else they can do.

Pinnacle Airlines (Continental Express and Delta Connection) Files for Bankruptcy

Uploaded by on Apr 2, 2012
Major airline holding company Pinnacle Airlines announced today they they are filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The $1 billion company, which files under names such as Continental Express and Delta Connection, is hoping to use the filing to continue implementing a turnaround plan aimed at addressing its operational and financial challenges. It plans to restructure its operating agreements with Delta Air Lines and wind down its operations with United Airlines.

Sean Menke, President and CEO of Pinnacle, said, "We intend to use the Chapter 11 process to reset our financial and operational structure in order to position Pinnacle for viability over the long term. Quite simply, our current business model is not sustainable, as increasing operating expenses, liquidity constraints, business integration delays and difficulties associated with combining our operations have hindered our ability to maximize our growth potential. Following a lengthy review process, and with the assistance of independent financial, industry and legal advisors, our Board of Directors determined that a court-supervised restructuring is the only feasible course of action to implement our turnaround plan."

Pinnacle also said in its press release that it asks its pilots and other employees, both union and non-union, to help cut costs. This will most likely mean some of its 7,800 employees will lose their jobs.

France - Big Bang scientist may face jail over terror charges

Published on Apr 1, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ French prosecutors want a Franco-Algerian nuclear scientist to spend six years behind bars.

Adlène Hicheur, who worked at the CERN research centre in Geneva, Switzerland, is on trial in Paris on charges of criminal association as part of a terrorist entreprise.

Police arrested him after intercepting emails he wrote to an alleged al-Qaeda contact.

Hicheur has spent the past two years in custody awaiting trial.

His lawyer Patrick Baudouin said of the e-mail exchange:

"The prosecutor tried to prove those words were actually showing an intention to concretely act, helping to prepare or directly preparing a terrorist action. This is exactly what I contested, because Adlène Hicheur's words hadn't mentioned any precise planning of anything in particular."

When asked by euronews if police had identified the alleged Al-Qaeda contact, he said:

"This person has not been formally identified, but throughout the investigation they said it appears to be Mustapha Debchi, who is allegedly a senior member of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, based in Algeria. "But if you are sure about his identity, you don't say 'it appears to be' -- you say it is that person in question."

Hicheur's trial comes more than one week after French president Nicolas Sarkozy proposed to make repeated surfing of extremist websites a criminal offence following the Toulouse shootings.
