Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had promised to quit if lawmakers backed a mix of spending cuts and tax rises.

He is expected to hand in his resignation to the Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano, later on Saturday.

Former European commissioner and Italian senator Mario Monti is tipped to take over as premier.

Iran - Deadly blast at military base

http://www.euronews.net/ A massive explosion at an Iranian military base has left 27 people dead and at least 16 others wounded, some critically.

It is believed the victims are all members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

The blast occurred as weapons were being moved at the depot just outside the capital Tehran. Windows in nearby buildings were shattered and the sound of the explosion was heard 25 kilometres away.

Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances over the cause which they have described as "accidental."

Turkey - Ferry hijacker killed / Türkiye - Ferry korsanı öldürdü

http://www.euronews.net/ A man who hijacked a passenger ferry has been killed by Turkish special forces.

It is thought the assailant may have had links to militant Kurdish separatists.

The Governor of Istanbul said explosives were found on the dead man.

The vessel had been hijacked in the Sea of Marmara in northwest Turkey after it left the port of Izmit on Friday afternoon. Around 20 passengers were on board.

The high-speed sea bus then ran out of fuel and had to anchor west of Istanbul.
