Ever-attuned to the lifestyle choices of contemporary twenty-something Hong Kongers, director Pang Ho-cheung (Trivial Matters, SFF 2008) takes the change in smoking laws as his cue for this exuberant romantic comedy. Cherie (Miriam Yeung) works as a saleswoman and Jimmy (Shawn Yue) is a young advertising executive. They meet in a laneway populated by nearby office workers who smoke, tell stories, smoke, flirt and smoke some more.

She is in a failing relationship and he has just been dumped in favour of a Frenchman (the brunt of the joke that kick-starts the film) their attraction is immediate, enveloped in the heady fumes of their shared social vice. Bristling with rapid-fire dialogue, this thoroughly enjoyable film is spiced throughout with comic interview confessions about the things people do in the name of love.

TV ghost-hunters meet their match when they come up against a terrifying supernatural power.

For three years and 49 episodes, 'Paranormal Inspectors' was America's number one reality TV ghost-hunting show. Massive audiences tuned in each time the team explored an alleged haunting. And on every occasion their investigations resulted in any supernatural claims being resoundingly debunked. But then something really weird happened. After the 50th show was filmed, the series was cancelled without explanation and the episode never aired. So what actually happened during that 50th investigation? Following the tradition of such imaginative low-budget spookers as 'The Blair Witch Project', the 'Paranormal Activity' films and 'The Last Exorcism', co-directors Joe and Tess Smalley explore what transpires when hard-nosed science meets supernatural forces. Written by Ian Holt (co-author of the bestseller 'Dracula: The Un-Dead'), 'Episode 50' delivers the supernatural showdown we REALLY want to see on those reality TV ghost-hunt shows.

Screenplay: Joe Smalley, Tess Smalley, Ian Holt

You should see it because: It's a creepily effective low-budget shocker.

Synopsis

Burlesque was one of America's most popular forms of live entertainment in the first half of the 20th century. Gaudy, bawdy and spectacular, the shows entertained thousands of paying customers every night of the week and yet the legacy of burlesque is often misunderstood and left out of the history books. By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men) who lived it, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque and its experiences as a new renaissance.
