Their aim is to seal the same fate for their military rulers as they did for deposed president Hosni Mubarak in February.

Their message is simple: stand down now.

Tahrir Square was the focal point of the uprising that swept Mubarak from power.

Similar protests are taking place across the country, but there are also some demonstrations in support of the army.

Those backing the military say they can provide much-needed stability.

Initial reports suggest a low turnout: according to Interior Ministry figures, only 11.5 percent of voters had cast their ballot at midday.

The moderate Islamists from Justice and Development Party, or PJ, have been in opposition until now.

Mali - Reports 3 more Europeans abducted, one killed at Timbuktu

http://www.euronews.net/ Reports from Mali say three Europeans have been kidnapped and a fourth killed at Timbuktu in the north of the country. The information comes from a Malian government source.

The person killed is said to be German; the others' nationalities are not known.

The latest attack comes a day after two French geologists were kidnapped from their hotel at Hombori, 200 kilometres to the south. French troops have joined Malian forces in trying to find them.
