Turkey's biggest pro-opposition, anti-establishment news channel has been raided and taken over by the government. Halk TV was the last mainstream media outlet critical of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Turkiye's opposition has condemned the takeover of Halk TV, and journalists say that the country's democracy is being destroyed.

Firstpost looks at how Erdogan managed to get the critical news channel taken over.
