#mclaren #automoviles - McLaren Lost £924 Million in a Single Year — Here's WHY: The Sleeper List

15 September 2026

McLaren lost £924 million in a single year — up from £349 million the year before. A company that builds around two thousand cars a year, in one factory, in Woking. To survive it, McLaren sold its own heritage car collection. Then its advanced technologies division, the profitable engineering arm that worked with aerospace and healthcare. Then the McLaren Technology Centre itself — the Norman Foster building it designed and built for itself — in a sale and leaseback. It still works there. It pays rent to someone else to do so. Sell your history, sell your best division, then sell the roof over your head. In that order. In March 2024, Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat took full ownership of McLaren Group. In April 2025, Abu Dhabi's CYVN Holdings completed the purchase of 100% of McLaren Automotive. Not a stake — all of it. CYVN is owned by the government of Abu Dhabi. It also holds roughly $2.2bn in the Chinese EV maker Nio, and a controlling stake in Gordon Murray Technologies — the company founded by the man who designed the McLaren F1. Last week CYVN confirmed £450 million into Woking and around 1,000 UK jobs, part of $2bn over five years. McLaren's chief executive Nick Collins, formerly of JLR, has said the automotive division was in a perilous position before the deal, with cash burn threatening new models. Without that money there's a real question whether McLaren would still be building cars. But the plan reported for what comes next isn't more supercars. CYVN has merged McLaren with Forseven, a British EV startup it also owns, and the combined business is reported to be planning luxury SUVs and saloons carrying the McLaren name. That hasn't been formally confirmed by the company. This video covers the full story: what McLaren actually is, how the losses happened, what a sale and leaseback commits you to, who CYVN is, and why there is now no significant British car badge owned in Britain. Does it matter who owns a British car company, as long as the cars are still built here?
