Turkey's biggest pro-opposition, anti-establishment news channel has been raided and taken over by the government. Halk TV was the last mainstream media outlet critical of president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Turkiye's opposition has condemned the takeover of Halk TV, and journalists say that the country's democracy is being destroyed.
Firstpost looks at how Erdogan managed to get the critical news channel taken over. Hem Kaur Saroya also explains how the Turkish government has been capturing both the media and the opposition itself. HKS also examines the state of democracy in Erdogan's Turkey today. 00:00 - Erdogan Takes Over Pro-Opposition Halk TV 00:56 - Dawn Police Raid Halts Broadcast Ahead of Trial 01:36 - Channel Owner's Family Detained 02:14 - Press Freedom Blow: Journalists & Opposition Protest 03:07 - Capturing the Opposition: Defections to Erdogan's Party 03:46 - Izmir Mayor Defects to the Ruling AKP 04:09 - Backlash & Protests Against Usurped Rights 04:59 - Outro --- Turkey Media | Recep Tayyip Erdogan | Turkish Government | Opposition News Channel | Media Takeover | Firstpost | Hem Saroya | Vantage #turkey #erdogan #pressfreedom #mediacensorship #turkishpolitics #mediafreedom #opposition #firstpost #vantageonfirstpost
Police in Türkiye carried out a raid on the widely watched, independent news channel Halk TV on October 14.
