Tempting as it is to tiptoe around potentially upsetting issues, doing so could actually confuse matters. Others are as aware of their presence as you are and as puzzled that you're avoiding these. They could even assume you've something to hide. Unsettling as the revealing hard facts are, ultimately that's the best approach.
