Cucumbers imported from Spain may be the source of an outbreak of E. coli in Germany. Three out of four of the vegetables in an organic shipment carried the harmful bacteria. The tested cucumbers were being sold in Hamburg supermarkets.
State authorities confirmed the findings by Hamburg's Institute for Hygiene and Environment, which detected E. coli in the Spanish cucumbers.
31 May 2011 Institute for Hygiene and Environment confirmed today that the E.coli found in the Spanish cucumbers was not the same strain that has killed the 16 people to date.
