Published on 4 Jul 2016
In July 2015 the Ukrainian government started to gradually introduce the brand-new police force in the country's cities.

Now, almost a year since, we are joined by Ukraine's police chief Khatia Dekanoidze to discuss this major reform of the Ukrainian government.

Khatia Dekanoidze: "I can't say that of course that all police officers are fair right now – of course they are not. But we're trying to get rid of the corrupted officers.

I can face this pressure or stress every day, because it's my everyday job. And nobody can't deny that this is a tough job. Of course, it is tough. Because on the one hand we have to fight against criminals, and on the other hand – do some reforms.

There are a lot of signs of sabotage, resistance from the system, especially at the first phase, when we started"

#Ukraine - Brexit for Ukraine: Experts share thoughts how Brexit will affect Ukraine's future: UKRAINE TODAY

Published on 2 Jul 2016
127 billion US dollars is a price of Brexit for the richest people on the world. This is the approximate sum 400 tycoons including Microsoft founder Bill Gates lost at stock markets on Friday, as soon as the referendum results were officially declared. George Soros in turn gained a good deal on British pound weakening, since he has been providently obtaining gold bars and shares of gold-mining companies.

While the financial geniuses compete for large personal incomes, world stock markets tremble in fear. British pound of sterling's has lost more than 10% of its value, having fallen to the 1985 indices. As a result, European currency rate is 3,5% cheaper in comparison to US dollar.

All these boring financial activities could have been ignored, if the E.U. was not the main trading partner of Ukraine. However, since 34% of Ukrainian export goods head to the West, Ukrainian specialists express big worries concerning the issue.

Apart from economic problems, Brexit may postpone the adoption of visa-free regime for Ukraine. One of the reasons why London initiated the Brexit referendum was migrant's crisis. In fear of illegal refugees the EU may simply delay visa liberalization.

Famous Ukrainian opera singer Vasyl Slipak died in the eastern Ukraine. Local media report Slipak was killed on June 29th in a warzone, shot by a sniper using a full-bore rifle near the village of Luhanske at about 6 am.

This is already a charitable concert, Slipak performing in a T-shirt with a trident and a specific Ukrainian patriot's haircut. The money he gets for singing opera artist gives to the children of the killed soldiers and finances the army.

In 2015 Vasyl Slipak told in the interview he has no moral right to remain in France, since Ukraine has to struggle with outer enemies. Before departing to the frontline he was awarded with a medal.

Vasyl Slipak was shot close to the occupied town of Debaltseve, while the Russian-backed separatist forces started advancing using the heavy weapon and mortars. The blood brothers of Vasyl' Slipak say his songs about courageous warriors have become his final prophecy

#Ukraine - What Next for Ukraine after Brexit: Visa-free regime is likely to be postponed: UKRAINE TODAY

Published on 25 Jun 2016
Great Britain is leaving the European Union. Despite numerous predictions on UK staying in the EU the citizens surprisingly voted to leave. London, Scotland, and Northern Ireland strived mainly for the European future, but the whole England in total along with Wales willing for Brexit predominated.

52% against 48 - this is the final result meaning the end to 43-year-long membership in the project of united Europe.

A good deal of European politicians already expressed their regret on such a decision. British Prime Minister David Cameron though voting for the EU said he accepts the people's opinion and declared his resign no later than mid-autumn.

Ukraine has its own interest in the referendum outcome. Now the Ukrainians should definitely forget about visa-free regime, according to Iryna Gerashchenko, one of Ukrainian deputies.

Additionally Russia may win a good deal on Great Britain leaving the European Union, since peace in Ukraine is supposedly set to become of less interest to Brussels.

And the member of Ukrainian delegation to PACE Volodymyr Ariyev is sure the next year Parliamentary Assembly will steadily lift Russia sanctions. The only one to instill optimism is the head of Ukraine's National Bank Valeriya Gontareva. She convinces Brexit will not affect the hryvnia currency rate.

Published on 23 Jun 2016
Ukraine is on verge of sanitary catastrophe. The majority of current sewerage system constructed in the Soviet times is totally worn out. Out-of-date tubes leak, thus absorbing numerous bacteria infecting the water supply systems. Intensified with the anomalous summer heat, a good deal of infections has already resulted in negative consequences.

The first to suffer were the residents of Izmail, a town in Odesa region in southern Ukraine. The infection outbreak started in mid-June when several hundreds of people turned at the same time for medical help, complaining about unknown enteric symptoms. In the following days the number of patients rose drastically, the doctors reported lack of hospital beds. Local authorities immediately closed all public eating places declaring an emergency state.

Ecologists claim the source of infection might be tap water, supposedly contaminated after heavy rain. Until now the residents do not risk to drink running water, choosing instead bottled water delivered from other places, despite it being expensive and difficult to purchase.

Another catastrophe happened on the opposite side of Ukrainian map. 50,000 residents of the city of Sumy in northern part of the country were left without water supply after the pumping station's breakdown. Shortly after it went out of order on Monday, June 20th, the authorities cut the water supply to avoid mass poisoning. Along with the numerous households regional children hospital, military hospital, retirement home, and several kindergartens had to deal with summer heat without running water.

Published on 21 Jun 2016
Ukraine is passionately awaiting the decision of the Pan-Orthodox Council currently being held on the Greek island of Crete.

Earlier Ukraine's Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) officially addressed His All Holiness Bartholomew I, the Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch to grant autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine that is currently subordinate to Moscow's Patriarchate.

The deputies asked to recognize the Act of 1686 according to which the Kyiv metropolitan was allegedly attached to the Moscow Patriarchate.

The unique gathering of Eastern Orthodox Christianity Churches started on June 19th after a thousand-year-break. Nearly a century ago the representatives of the confessions started negotiations of a new Pan-Orthodox gathering, full of scandals and intrigues mixed with preparations hindered by wars, Soviet cadency, and internal manipulations. Published on 19 Jun 2016
Latest Global Piece Index ranks Ukraine among the top 10 most dangerous countries in the world. Kyiv is placed at the 156th position out of 163, in the cheerless company of Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Experts name the conflict in the Donbas region, caused by Russia, as the main factor for the deteriorated security situation in the country. The uncontrolled territories now also serve as the main source of illegal arms trafficking.

And all kind of people tried to use these weapons to destabilise other regions of Ukraine. At least a dozen blasts rocked the major cities in the country in 2015. They were classified as terrorist attacks by the local law enforcers.

#Finland - The Thief Next Door: Russia's rich history of annexing neighbouring countries: UKRAINE TODAY

Published on 7 Jun 2016
Finland... the thought of Vladimir Putin doesn't quite come to mind at the first mention of it. But, a small Finnish autonomy, the Aland islands is living under the vast shadow of the Kremlin.

The trip begins at a central bus station. Although it may sound warm and exotic the actual climate here is damp and cold. Aland - nearly seven thousand rocky islands, a region that encompasses an archipelago at the entrance of the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. Just like Ukraine's Crimea, Aland is an autonomous region and although nowadays it is the only Swedish-speaking region in Finland... Aland islands were under the rule of the Russian Empire. And seemingly, Russia's interest in the Finnish autonomy has not faded yet.

So what's it like for the Finns to live right beside a neighbour that stole a part of their land? From a Ukrainian standpoint that sounds way-too-familiar.

The Kremlin grip on the neighbouring ex-Soviet states is evident, but it's not that easy to spot in Finland, at least not with a naked eye.

The phenomena of cross-border shopping. It is a part of the Finland/Russia frontier too. The Russian language can be heard everywhere here. Special buses bring shoppers here several times a day.
