#Brazil - Inside Story - Was president Dilma Rousseff's impeachment a coup? / Brasil - você Presidente Dilma Rousseff impeachment e sopa?

Published on 13 May 2016
The twists and turns of Brazil's political drama have been compared to the TV series, House of Cards.

Deeply unpopular leader Dilma Rousseff has been suspended from office and taking her place as interim president is a man perhaps even more polarising than her.

Michel Temer is seen as serving the interests of Brazil's business elite and despite calling for unity, he's appointed a cabinet made up entirely of white men.

President Dilma Rousseff has called her suspension from office a "coup" and has vowed to fight back.

But is Michel Temer the right leader to lift Brazil out of its political crisis? And was Rousseff's impeachment a democratic move or a coup?

Presenter: Fauziah Ibrahim

Guests:

Rodrigo Nunes - Political Analyst and Lecturer at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

Shannon Sims - Journalist who focuses on Brazilian politics and the Olympics.

Claudio Couto - Political Scientist and Associate Professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

In what has been a brutal week for residents near Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, another tragedy struck a nerve with football fans. At a cafe near the capital, 14 Real Madrid fans, amongst other innocent civilians, were killed when ISIS militants shot them with AK-47’s because “they think football is anti-Muslim”.

"Three terrorists stormed the café hosting the meeting around midnight and opened fire at the fans who had gathered to watch old recordings of the Spanish football club. Armed with AK-47s, they left bodies strewn across floor in the northern Shi'ite Muslim town of Balad. Gruesome pictures from the scene show the floor covered in broken glass and soaked in blood under posters of Real Madrid players and coach Zinedine Zidane. President of the Madrid supporters club, Ziad Subhan, said: 'A group of Islamic terrorists, from ISIS, came into the café, armed with AK-47s, shooting at random at everyone who was inside’."

#Russia - Putin vows to neutralize threats posed by US missile system in Europe

Published on 13 May 2016
The Russian president warns that Moscow will act to neutralize the threats posed by a US missile system in Europe.

Speaking to top defense and military industry officials, Putin said the US missile system threatens global security. Putin said the system is aimed at blunting Russia's nuclear arsenal adding that Washington is using pretexts to develop it. The remarks came a day after the United States switched on an 800 million dollar missile system in Romania. The two missile systems in Romania and Poland are part of NATO's larger European missile system, due to become fully operational by 2018. The US and NATO claim that the system is not aimed against Russia, but Moscow views it as a security threat on its doorstep.
