Israeli-Palestinian attacks continue Gaza funerals, exchanging fire with Israel continue

Published on Mar 12, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Mourners carry a coffin through the streets of Gaza of one of those killed in a weekend of violence between Palestinians and Israelis.

The cross-border conflict, which flared up after an Israeli airstrike on Friday, is ongoing and the death toll is rising.

As rockets continue to be fired into Israel, another four Palestinians have died in an Israeli airstrike on Monday - two militants and two civilians.

Earlier in the day, two Islamic Jihad members were killed in Khan Younis, and another young Palestinian died in Beit Lahiya.

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barack said: "If attacks continue, we will continue to respond. It takes patience and a standing power to overcome these challenges, but we are determined to defend our civilian citizens at any moment."

Two Israelis have been wounded and buildings damaged as rockets hit the southern port city of Ashdod. There were also rocket attacks on the neighbouring city of Beersheba.

http://www.euronews.com/ The upsurge of violence around Gaza follows a familiar pattern: militants fire rockets into Israel which brings air strikes, or vice versa.

The death toll has pushed past two dozen on the Palestinian side, with many more wounded, most of them civilians.

The Israeli military said its first air strike on Friday killed Zuheir al-Qessi, who Palestinians said headed the Popular Resistance Committees, armed activists from different factions. Israel named a second militant leader killed as Mahmoud al-Hanani.

Israel released video purporting to be of what it calls preventive targeting to kill militants.

Nightfall brought separate Israeli air strikes against the coastal territory ruled by Hamas.

When rockets were fired for a fourth day in a row on Monday, Israel said its short-range air defence interception system called "Iron Dome" is protecting its southern cities, downing rockets with a 75 percent success rate.

With the storm of violence came a storm of funerals in Gaza.

Most of the dead are said to have been militants.

Gaza's Hamas rulers and Israel both seem to want to avoid the kind of all-out war that erupted three years ago.

But Hamas can not restrain smaller Gaza factions from attacking Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: "My policy and instructions are clear: we will strike anybody that plans to strike us, tries to strike us or actually does hit us. The Israeli Army is dealing these terror organisations very heavy blows."

Islamic Jihad, the faction behind most of the rocket fire, said there will be no ceasefire.

The group said: "We will not take part in any calm with the enemy, who impose their unfair rules. We will not allow a calm that disregards our people's blood."

Calls by Hamas asking the rest of the Palestinian factions to stop their rocket fire have gone unheeded.
Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahar in Cairo said he expects matters will calm down.

He said: "Hamas has not taken any decision to escalate. It is trying to reach a truce, conditioned on the Israeli enemy halting aggression."

Egyptian efforts to broker a ceasefire appeared to be stuck over a demand by Islamic Jihad that Israel first promise not to target militant leaders for future attack.

Russia - joins China against EU aviation C02 tax / Россия - Китай присоединяется к ЕС налоговый авиации C02

Published on Mar 12, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Russia has added its voice to China's boycotting or refusing to pay a tax on air travel carbon emissions which the EU insists will come into force next January. The European aeronautic industry is shaken, warning it could start a retaliatory trade war.

On Sunday, the six companies behind Airbus plus equipment makers Safran of France and MTU of Germany wrote a formal letter of concern to the founding governments of Airbus, the French, British, German and Spanish.

The signatories called attention to what they say would be severe economic consequences to their sector. Airbus chief executive Tom Enders said the move threatens 1,000 jobs in the company itself, and another 1,000 in the supply chain.

Last Thursday, the head of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company EADS, Louis Gallois, said Beijing was refusing to approve orders for Chinese carriers of 45 Airbus planes, including
10 double-deck, wide-body A380s - all told worth more than nine billion euros, because of the carbon tax.

The EU's Emissions Trading Scheme calls for all air transportation companies operating within the EU to buy the equivalent of 15 percent of their C02 emissions, calculated for each whole flight to or from EU airports. The European Commission says that would work out to a 2-12 euro charge per passenger.

China has forbidden its companies to pay the tax, which is aimed at helping to offset global warming, in which C02 plays a role. Air traffic produces an estimated three percent of all man-made emissions which are said to contribute to a greenhouse effect.

On Friday, the European Union's environment ministers reiterated their full support for the tax, and the EU commissioner in charge of climate matters, Connie Hedegaard, warned that the bloc would take appropriate measures to press its position.

France - Sarkozy plays the immigration card in election campaign

Published on Mar 12, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ President Nicolas Sarkozy has threatened to pull France out of the European Union's visa-free Schengen zone unless the bloc beefs up the EU's borders.

Sarkozy raised the immigration issue at a campaign rally as polls show he faces a tough battle for re-election in April and May.

"The Schengen agreement no longer lets us respond to the seriousness of the situation. It needs revising. We have to put into force for Schengen a reform that is as structural as the one we have just put in place for the Euro. We cannot leave managing the flow of migrants to the technocrats and courts," President Sarkozy told supporters in Paris.

Centrist leader and presidential rival Francois Bayrou was quick to react:

"What does it mean to pull out off Schengen? I will tell you, it means to put in place once again the barriers and the borders and the customs officers between France and Spain, France and Italy, and between France and Germany can you believe it?"

Critics say Sarkozy 's proposal is aimed at trying to siphon off support from the extreme right, National-Front candidate Marine Le Pen who is snapping at his heals.

Most of the candidates including front runner Socialist Francois Hollande have in recent weeks tapped into French concerns over illegal immigration - concerns which have grown as the country struggles against recession.

Gaza - Children wounded after Israeli air strikes

Published on Mar 11, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.com/ Israeli war planes carried out new air strikes on Gaza on Sunday night. Medics say three people were killed including a 12-year-old boy.

Witnesses said one strike hit a family home injuring several children.

Israel confirmed the strikes had taken place but claimed they had targeted a weapons storage facility and four rocket launching sites.

The cross border violence has increased since Friday when Israeli jets killed the head of a militant group prompting a barrage of Palestinian rocket fire.

In southern Israel in the town of Ashkelon residents are spending a fourth day under siege.
The onslaught of rockets has forced them indoors.

On Sunday about 50 were fired into the area causing damage to buildings but no injuries. Israel's military says it has intercepted around half of the Palestinian rockets.
