Britain - McCanns 'waited four months' to sue - Richard Desmond tells Leveson

Uploaded by on Jan 12, 2012
Richard Desmond has told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards that the parents of Madeleine McCann waited four months before taking legal action about stories which suggested they may have been responsible for her disappearance.

The media mogul suggested that they seemed "quite happy" that the story was kept on the front page.

He claimed that the Daily Express had done everything it could to try to verify its reports about the child's disappearance in Portugal.

And he accused the Press Complaints Commission of scapegoating his paper.

BBC News - Daily Star Editor 'sorry' for McCann distress
Uploaded by on Jan 12, 2012
The editor of the Daily Star has told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards that she regrets the paper's coverage of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The Daily Star was forced to pay the McCanns £500,000 for libellous stories including one headlined "Maddie 'sold' by hard-up McCanns".

Dawn Neesom said: "The source of the stories was entirely coming from Portugal and we were being fed stories by the Portuguese police and press.

"It was a risk and to this day I regret what happened in the McCann case and all I can do is repeat the apology on page one for the hurt and distress we caused them."

Afghanistan - US investigates Taliban corpse abuse

Published on Jan 12, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.net/ The US military is investigating a video showing what appears to be troops urinating on the dead bodies of Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

The footage of what seems to be US marines has been uploaded to several sites including videosharing site Youtube.

The film could be another blow for America after previous scandals like the abuses at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison in 2004 and the recent conviction of 11 soldiers for running what became known as a 'kill squad', murdering unarmed Afghan civilians.

I read about this story from the Mother Jones piece listed here. They mention the user "semperfilonevoice", which is the same Youtube profile from which I downloaded the footage and subsequently uploaded to my own profile (keeping same title).

Needless to say, the footage is disturbing, disgusting, and will be a black eye to American foreign policy.

How many more reasons do we need to end the war in Afghanistan?

Cuba - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad goes west as sanctions hit home

Published on Jan 11, 2012 by
http://www.euronews.net/ Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has met Cuba's President Raul Castro as the Iranian leader continued his drive to rally support amid growing tensions over his country's nuclear programme.

The visit was overshadowed by the killing of a nuclear scientist in a car bomb attack that Iran has blamed on Israel and the US.

The trip was an occasion to strengthen already strong economic and political ties. Cuba, like the other countries on Ahmadinejad's Latin American tour - Venezuela, Nicaragua and Ecuador - have endorsed Tehran's right to develop nuclear power.

Russell Grant's Daily Horoscopes for Thursday 12th January 2012

,
Aries (Mar21/Apr20) The only thing you want is to spend time with your lover. Unfortunately, social obligations demand you tear yourself away from your admirer's gaze. This puts you in a bad temper. Try to hide your mood, as you'll be rubbing elbows with important executives. If you play your cards right, you'll make some valuable career contacts. You never know who is in the position to fund a project or offer you a job. If you make a good impression, you can sneak back into your amour's arms.
 .
Taurus (Apr21/May21) You won't be able to charm someone into giving you their business. Ultimately, you're better off without this pinchpenny as a customer. Ease your disappointment by enjoying a quiet evening with family. Being surrounded by people you know and love takes the sting out of work related disappointments. You're in the position to help a relative get a better education. Even a small gift of money will go a long way towards easing their journey. Obey your generous instincts.
 .
Gemini (May22/Jun21) A stimulating conversation with someone sexy makes you flush with pleasure. It looks as if you've met your intellectual match. This is a relief, as it's difficult to find someone who is as informed and quick witted as you. If you're already in a committed relationship, take this opportunity to hire an agent, accountant, or manager. Having someone attend to the boring matters of business frees you to focus on the more creative aspects of your work.

Cancer (Jun22/Jul23) Beware of buying something you can't afford. Save your money to cover practical expenses and pay off credit card debt. If you stay focused, you'll be back in the black sooner than you think. A magnetic lover consumes your thoughts and you'll find yourself fantasising about all sorts of passion packed scenarios. If you embark on an affair, you'll have to protect yourself. Don't let their strong personality eclipse your wants, needs, and desires.
 .
Leo (Jul24/Aug23) Don't take your best friend or lover's kindness for granted. Lately, someone has been bending over backwards for you. If you don't take the time to express your appreciation for their extraordinary selflessness, they'll take offence. Good news about a business matter lifts your spirits. It looks as if you're in line for a good job or long term assignment. An authority figure is impressed by your organisational skill. Take this opportunity to go out and celebrate with your favourite folk.
 .
Virgo (Aug24/Sep23) Overindulging in food, drink, and revelry has taken a toll on your body. It's time to cut back and adopt healthier practices. Force yourself to go to bed at a certain time each night, until a habit is established. If you suffer from insomnia, stop eating and using the computer at least one hour before your retire. You've got to give your system a chance to transition into a restful state. Your wit and intelligence attracts the attention of a prominent executive.
 .
Libra (Sep24/Oct23) Take a flirt's compliments with a pinch of salt. Although you find these remarks flattering, they are designed to obtain something other than affection. Before you know it, you will be asked to contribute to a campaign or write a letter of recommendation. With friends like this, who needs enemies? Stick close to family. You can trust their love is genuine. Your relatives will also be honest when you put a foot wrong. Listen to their warnings about your admirer.
 .
Scorpio (Oct24/Nov22) Take a more realistic view of your strengths and weaknesses. There's a reason you keep falling short of certain career goals. Whether you lack knowledge, experience, or finesse is immaterial. The important thing is to improve any shortcomings that are holding you back. Take a class, serve as an apprentice to an expert, or ask an executive for pointers on polishing your image. A little effort will go a long way towards landing the job you want.
 .
Sagittarius (Nov23/Dec21) Flattery will get you nowhere. You're better off being brutally honest, as your instincts demand. Don't tell someone they look fabulous when they appear ill or tired. Ask what is wrong and advise a trip to a spa or salon. Your health is improving, thanks to increased attention to your diet. Enjoying wholesome meals instead of fast food will boost your energy. It will also help you slow down and enjoy life's simpler pleasures. You've been burning the candle at both ends recently.
 .
Capricorn (Dec22/Jan20) You're spending money as if it's going out of style. If you don't slow down, you won't be able to afford an important class or trip that is looming on the horizon. Keep your priorities straight. By putting a portion of your income into an interest bearing account, you'll have enough to finance an exciting adventure. After all, how many new outfits and accessories do you need? Focus on taking pleasure in what you have, instead of yearning for the things you don't possess.
 .
Aquarius (Jan21/Feb19) Your wit and charm won't convince someone to grant you a favour. If you need some money or a recommendation, be direct. People hate feeling manipulated. Fortunately, you're in a good position to get a grant, loan, or scholarship from a lending institution. Fill out the paperwork as thoroughly as possible. If you're unsure how certain questions should be answered, ask the powers that be. They'll be happy to assist you. You might only have one shot at this opportunity, so stay focused.
 .
Pisces (Feb20/Mar20) A private reverie will be interrupted by a terrible pest. No matter what you do or say, you won't be able to send this troublemaker away. You might as well grin and bear their company. Your gracious handling of this situation will result in a party invitation. Be sure to wear something special to this event, as you're sure to attract romantic attention. It's easy to be sociable when you look your best. Keep your eyes open for a witty intellectual with classic style.
